Library News

There have been many exciting changes occurring in the library this year. An injection of colour, an upgraded computing space and we welcomed a new batch of library monitors.

Last year, Miss Klein ran a design workshop with the Student Representative Council and selected staff. This whole day workshop gave the students and teachers an opportunity to create a vision for the library redesign based on their needs.  This is coming together and we are looking forward to being able to show you the finished redesign in the near future. Miss Klein would like to thank Mr Backhouse, Mrs Bennett, Mr Cheverall, Mr O’Brien and Mr Viset who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this vision come together.

Term one was a busy start to the year. The seniors have whipped through the jigsaw puzzle kindly donated by Mrs Schild, the cat and book combination was a winner.  Reading Café continues to run on Thursday during break two during which quiet reading is the focus. As the weather cools hot chocolate will be available for purchase, replacing the current milkshakes.

The blind date with a book event was well received in celebration of Valentine’s Day, and we saw an increase in the number of blind dates borrowed compared to last year. International Women’s Day was celebrated with a visual display recognising the amazing achievements and inspirational thoughts of our female staff. We look forward to creating a similar display in November for International Men’s Day.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is now underway. This is an excellent opportunity for students in year 7 to 9 to read for leisure and pleasure and experience quality literature. Any students interested in challenging themselves to read more and to read more widely can see Miss Klein in the library or go to https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/ for more information.

Meet the Library Monitors

We would like to introduce you to one of our amazing year 7 library monitors, Amelia Stevens. Amelia is pictured with our other fantastic year 7 library monitor Alyssa Squires.

What is one of your favourite books and why?

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of my favourites. I love this trilogy of thrilling action books because generally I love books set in a different time, like The Tribe Series by Ambelin Kwaymullina. That’s another great read.

What do you like about being a library monitor?

I’d have to say that the best bit about being a library monitor is seeing all the new books early and helping keep the library clean. We also get special privileges like we can bring our bags into the library and eat in the workroom before we start duty.

Should I apply to be a library monitor?

If you love books and often find yourself in the library at lunch, then yes! Library monitor is a very laid back, fun job! But if you prefer to be outside maybe it isn’t really for you. But if you want to, go for it!
