Year Adviser Reports

Year 8

Term 2 is off and running with many events to look forward to. For our sports people, we have the Cross Country and Athletics carnivals in coming weeks. For our musicians, we have the 'On-Track' performance night on 14 May. All Year 8 students will participate in a welfare day in Week 8.

It is pleasing to see that Year 8 students are taking pride in their classwork and assessment tasks. Throughout their schooling, students will receive a range of formal and informal feedback from teachers regarding their work. It is important that students recognise the significance of this feedback and use it to develop their knowledge and skills within courses. When it comes to assessment tasks, students should reflect on each task by asking themselves the following questions:

  • What did I do well in this task?
  • What areas do I need to improve on?
  • Did I manage my time effectively?
  • Did I prepare thoroughly?
  • Have I been asking enough questions in class to ensure that I fully understand the content?
  • What strategies can I put in place to improve my knowledge and skills in this area?

By taking the time to go through this process, students are able to more clearly identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop a plan to improve.

As the weather becomes cooler, a reminder that our school uniform consist of a navy blue fleece jacket or jumper with the school emblem. Hoodies are not permitted, nor are jumpers that are not navy blue. Should you have a temporary issue where correct uniform can not be worn, please provide a note to your roll call teacher.

Looking forward to a great term!

Year 10

Welcome back to Term 2 Year 10! It’s going to be a very busy term and already most of the year has participated in the minimum standards online testing. Early results in indicate that the year are doing really well! Remember there is plenty of opportunity for you to complete the minimum standards, so don’t worry!

Last Friday on year assembly I handed the students forms for the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine. This is a great opportunity to get this free vaccination that covers teenagers for four strains of the disease. This is different to the vaccine your child would have had at 12 months which covered them for the C strain only. If you miss out on the vaccine at school, anyone between the ages of 15 - 19 years can get it free from their GP.  I encourage all students to get vaccinated - older adolescents have an increased risk of contracting the disease and as you would be aware sometimes the outcome is fatal. Vaccination date is Tuesday 18 June - please fill out the card and have your child return to me or the front office before this date.

Congratulations to the Year 10 students who attended Year 7 camp as peer support leaders at the end of last term. They did an amazing job and the camp leaders were full of praise for our students. I know the Year 7 students also appreciated their efforts.

As previously mentioned this is a very busy year for the students and they need to keep organised to ensure deadlines are met.

Some dates for Term 2 to keep in mind:

  • Thursday 6 June - Senior Information Evening. Parents will be invited to the school to learn about pathways for senior study 2020 - 2021.
  • Wednesday 12 June – Stand Tall. All of Year 10 will be travelling to the city to attend this sponsored day. This event presents a range of guest speakers with the aim of inspiring and bringing hope to the lives of young people.  Students who attended last year raved about it.  https://www.standtallevent.com/
  • Thursday June 20 – Subject Information Evening. Parents and students will get the opportunity to talk to staff about courses offered by each faculty, see samples of work, texts and gather information to make subject choices.

Information letters outlining the details of these events will be distributed soon.

Year 12

We have now moved past the half way point of Year 12 after a well-earned break. Term 2 is an extremely important time for students to work hard and prepare before the upcoming trial exams in Term 3, followed by the HSC in Term 4.  I encourage all students to reflect on their progress and make refinements to ensure their class and study time is used effectively. To do this, each student is required to create a study timetable that suits their learning style and course load. It is essential to plan your study in chunks which will make study achievable. All students have been offered a study planner, HSC survival guide and term overview to support this process. I have additional copies in my staffroom if students have misplaced them.

I encourage all families to attend the parent teacher night on Tuesday 4 June. This provides an opportunity for parents and carers to speak to staff about their student’s progress and areas they could further improve in. Online bookings through our Sentral portal will be available soon. As Year Adviser, I encourage parents to book an appointment with myself if they have any concerns about their students’ progress.

This term, we begin our fundraising for the formal and gift to the school. We kick off the fundraising with the athletics day BBQ on Wednesday 29 May. This will be closely followed by our main event, the Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 29 June. I encourage all students and their families to inform the wider community of this event and come along to support our wonderful year group.

On Monday 7 May, I took our girls futsal team to the Central Coast Championship. The U/19’s team included four Year 12 students. Alex Sidiropoulos, Chrissy Soares, Hannah Casey and Paris Blair played exceptionally well and were fantastic role models for the younger students. I was extremely proud of all of them!
