A quick wrap up of Term One

Last term offered a great start to a year of exciting and diverse Elective choices: Salsa Dancing, Soccer, Model United Nations, Fashion Design and Illustration, Ply-By-Design, Programming, Viva Fitness, Theatresports, Kitchen Garden and our Year 10 Careers Program. Following is a gallery to show some of the happenings across the term.

If you, or someone you know, is able to offer a weekly Elective we would love to hear about it. Some suggestions from students have been: Board Games, Basketball, Jewellery Making, Painting, Photoshop, Music Industry,  3D Animation, 3D Printing, Barista, Book Club, Journalism, Criminology, First Aid... just to name a few. Alternatively, if you are able to supervise a student-run Elective each week, please let us know.

Term Two choices

Students will be presented with this term's choices on Thursday 2 May. This will include a 30 minute viewing of a new inspiring documentary Generation Inspired, a film that talks about how to overcome fear, exam pressure and career decisions, shared by real people who struggled and now are taking on the world. We will also hear from an inspiring employee in the growing field of Surveying, which is also one of the oldest professions in the world, dating back nearly 3000 years with the Egyptians.

A brief description of this term's offerings include the following:

The Art of Botanical Drawing

This Elective is an introduction to the techniques of botanical painting and drawing. Capture the beauty of the plants and learn how to recognise and draw a wide variety of flowers and leaves, including succulents, vegetables, trees, perennials and grasses.

Chess

Have fun playing and learning chess and at the same time develop problem-solving skills, improve memory and patience and analytical ability.

Viva Fitness

Throughout this Elective you may participate in activities on and off campus such as trampolining, hip hop, boxing, aerobics, Zumba, tai chi, strength training, cycling, walking and many more. The class will be fun, inclusive and appropriate for any fitness level.

Ply-By-Design

In this Elective you will be instructed in the safe use of a variety of tools, depending on the project you choose and the tools you will need. Your project can be selected from a array of plans, or you can create your own.

Model United Nations

The Model United Nations, or MUN, is a great chance to learn about how to argue, listen and engage with globally significant issues.

Visual Storytelling

In this Elective you will learn filmmaking techniques to help imagine, create and tell strong stories by strengthening your ability to express yourself visually; you will explore the fundamental building blocks of a visual filmmaker, helping you to make great vignettes, shorts, films and other forms of visual communications.

Tabletop RPG - Earthdawn

This Elective will probe students to explore the character they create (feelings, thoughts, emotions) in depth as they encounter various environments and challenges in the world of Earthdawn. Role playing games are designed to create a shared story between the players that they co-create and enjoy together.

A World of Science and Technology

Learn about Newton's Laws of Motion by launching a bottle-rocket high into the sky; find out how fruit juice can be used to stop chemical reactions; build and program robots to follow your commands; and help to solve a crime using forensic evidence with seriously fun science and technology stuff! Learn about Chemistry Chaos, Material Sciences, Physics, Programming and Forensics all in one.

Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Garden in Term 2 will continue to be focused on creating a shared lunch for the group based around a theme. Each week will also aim to work for a time in the garden to nurture our crops. Jobs will involve food prep, cooking, cleaning, planting, weeding and mulching.

Creative Writing

This Elective is for all creative writers, aimed for spending time on writing stories and sharing them with each other. There might be opportunities to explore having a piece of work published in local newspapers, newsletters, magazines and library competitions. There will also be a small amount of writing games to mix it up. So come along, it will be great fun!

Fencing

Students can experience the Olympic sport of Fencing. Qualified coach and equipment supplied. It is a intense “sport” with a very clear purpose, requiring a high level of both mental and physical speed and agility. However, it is also subtle. A wide range of students can succeed as fencers. It is also a sport of manners. Fencing as a sport retains a visceral “edginess” that is part of the mental discipline that it teaches.
