VCE & Careers Expo –

Thursday 2 May to Sunday 5 May 2019, Caulfield Racecourse

The Careers Expo is a great opportunity for students to gather all sorts of information from under the one roof. I encourage all students and their families to please make time to get along to  the Expo over the weekend if they can. You will find many of the following resources:

  • Information about university, TAFE and training courses
  • Career advice
  • Study advice
  • Employment advice and opportunities
  • Apprenticeship and traineeship advice
  • International exchange and gap year programs

For information about this event please visit https://www.vceandcareers.com.au/

However, I also highly recommend that you visit the different institutional Open Days as they become advertised. I will post more information about this later in the term.

New courses in Applied Science

Are you interested in mastering big data and helping others to understand it? Then you might be interested in one of these courses. This program of study will provide students with the skills necessary to apply solutions to a wide range of industry-based and research issues.

  • Bachelor of Applied Data Science – 3-year degree
  • Bachelor of Applied Data Science Advanced (Honours) – 4-year degree

Please browse Data Science courses to find out more.

New courses at Swinburne

In 2020, Swinburne will offer a number of new major studies, as well as a new bachelor degree. The Bachelor of Arts will offer Global Studies and Indigenous Studies; the Bachelor of Health Science will offer Digital Health and Informatics and Health Promotion; Sports Media will be offered in the Diploma of Screen and Media, and a new degree being offered will be the Bachelor of Criminal Justice and Criminology. This new degree will be the only degree of its type in Victoria focusing on both the causes of crime and the fallout of crime. You’ll also get a professional learning experience by completing a Capstone Project in your final year.

Why study Digital Health and Informatics?

Innovation. Opportunities. Jobs.

What do you predict the value of the global  digital health market to be by 2024?

Try $379 billion dollars.

The Australian government has pumped $55 million in funding into research and innovation in digital health, creating more than 1000 new jobs.

Like using data, social media, wearable tech, virtual reality and artificial intelligence to improve the delivery and service of healthcare.

Defence University Sponsorship (DUS)

Whilst studying for a job-relevant degree at your choice of accredited university, join the Australian Defence Force (ADF), have your fees paid for, earn a salary while you complete your degree, and walk straight into a great ADF role following graduation. For more information regarding the application process, the courses that qualify for sponsorship and the roles university sponsorship can lead to, visit Defence University Sponsorship (DUS)

Useful tips for a University Degree Wannabe (UDW)

UDW: definition - a person who is convinced they want to go to University, but are not sure where or exactly what they want to study! Also suffers from ATAR anxiety.

1: Choose a degree that allows some flexibility in selecting a sequence of units that is right for you.

2: Make sure the program offers opportunities for practical work experience (sometimes called Industry Based Learning).

3: Do not base your decision solely on what your friends are doing.

4: Make sure travel time from your residence to the campus is within what you are willing and able to do on a day-to-day basis.

5. Get involved! Get out there and find out what the universities are offering by attending Open Days and asking many questions!

6. Do not just pick courses based on ATAR alone.

Applying to the UK - UCAS

If you are thinking about applying to university in the UK this year, an essential part of any application is the Personal Statement.

The Personal Statement gives you the chance to showcase your personality and stand out among thousands of applicants with similar academic records.

However, staring at a blank page can feel daunting, so BridgeU have created a worksheet to help you get started with planning your Personal Statement and to write something that is positive, engaging and sets you apart. You can download the worksheet below.
