Meet our Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College Captains for 2019

Harper Dawson MFGSC School Captain 2019
Harper Dawson MFGSC School Captain 2019

Hi, my name is Harper Dawson and I am thrilled to be in the position of MFG College Captain for 2019. I am extremely excited to be a part of the 2019 leadership team and to work alongside terrific staff and students to achieve truly wonderful things within our school community.

I love music! I play the alto saxophone in the all-girl soul band The Sweethearts. I have had many great experiences with the Sweethearts, including many performances across Geelong and Melbourne, and I was lucky enough to be a part of the 2017 European tour, where we performed in France, Switzerland and Italy. Music is a huge part of my life, so I am always looking for somewhere that I can perform, new things that I can learn about music and new people I can perform with. I love reading, writing and learning languages! I have always loved coming to school every day and I have a real passion for learning and creating.

Kelly Barrett MFGSC School Captain 2019

Hi! My name is Kelly Barrett and I am one of the MFG College Captains for 2019. I am very excited to take on this position with Harper and create positive changes and environments within our school community.

For those who don’t know me, I love science, especially biology and would like to pursue a career in health and science in the future. In my spare time I love to dance and read all kinds of books.

I am also a proud Gunditjmara woman and I’m looking forward to working with the Indigenous students in the future, as well as promoting Indigenous success particularly in STEAM.

I have been a student at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College since year 7 when I entered into the SEALP program, which allowed me to complete some of my VCE studies early. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Matthew Flinders and I believe our school has so much to offer to its students, including the teachers, learning programs and other opportunities such as the Indonesia study tour and Central Australia trip.

VISION FOR 2019:

Our shared vision for 2019 is to create a really positive environment at school, especially in the senior year levels, and we also hope to encourage more interaction across different year levels. We hope that, with the help of the senior student leadership team, we can inspire students to feel united, and feel proud to be an MFG student. We also wish to create a positive change in the community by collaborating with other schools around the Geelong Region. We can’t wait to get started!

Senior Leadership Team Camp Term 4 2018

At the end of 2018, the senior student leadership team had the great opportunity to spend two days together in Ocean Grove for their leadership camp.

We left early on Thursday December 13th, braving the rain, and stopped first at Cottage By The Sea in Queenscliff. While we were there we were able to help out with some odd jobs around the centre and the team thoroughly enjoyed having the chance to not only learn more about the Cottage but also have the ability to give back to the community. From there, we went to our campsite in Ocean Grove where we set up our tents and had a crack at some stand up paddle boarding on the Barwon River. We had a great time learning some new techniques and playing some games on the water. Then we prepared dinner and had some leadership brainstorming activities and team building activities. After a long day, we were all very happy to head to bed. The next morning we woke up bright and early for a long walk up the bluff. It was a true test of our leadership skills and teamwork skills to follow the directions we were given. After preparing some breakfast, we put our heads down for some solid planning time for the year ahead.

On behalf of the leadership team we hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer break and is looking forward to the fun filled year ahead.
