The Human Powered Vehicle Team set off Thursday in the heat and wind  to participate in the Energy Breakthrough. The students have prepared for this event all year. They have practised riding their trikes, learnt about renewable energy and its importance, along with developing and memorising a presentation for a panel of judges. This year we took three teams to the Energy Breakthrough, Storm, Tsunami and Avalanche.

Storm competed in the Try-Athlon with 64 other trikes. They presented speeches, answered questions in Design and Construction, competed in an obstacle course, where they came 3rd, a time trial, where they also came 3rd and finally they rode for eight hours in an endurance race. The team, made up mostly of new team members, overcame their fears and had a fantastic time. They finished 57th in the eight hour race, completing 139 laps, equating to riding 153km.  Well done Sophie Kirby, Anthony Traficante, Will Thurman, Ava Taylor, Aiden Veale, Manizha Mirdadi, Logan Scott and Lily Sanders.

Tsunami and Avalanche competed in a different race. They presented to a panel of judges and completed Design and Construction, demonstrating their knowledge of the environment,  renewable energy and the design and construction of their trike, but then rode for 24 hours.

Tsunami, for the first time in many years, was an all girls team. They placed 92nd out of 97 trikes, completing 322 laps or 509km in 24 hours. The girls all set goals for themselves, most of whom had never ridden in a race before. Well done Jessikah Tidd, Tara Sheppard-Robinson, Kirra Robinson, Sarah Kirby, Anna Pagtolon-an, Mackenzie Martin and Breanna Tidd.

Avalanche competed in the Open Section. An all boy team with a mix of experienced and new riders. This trike was purchased at the start of the year and the students loved riding it. Tsunami spent most of the race in the mid 40’s.  However, roll overs in the end, meant they finished 52nd out of 97 trikes. They completed 435 laps, riding the equivalent of 673km with an average lap time of three minutes. Congratulations Thomas Pagtolon-an, Jack Ashley, Jett Peart, Cade Mayfield Kenny, Angus Hogan, Mitchell Cazaly, Caleb Spain and Lachlan Grantham.

Thank you to Liz Fagan, Aaron Milsome, Luke Scott, Ash Howard and to the  parents who came to visit their child/children.
