On this day, students will not be required at school during the day. However, they are all required to attend the Awards Presentation Evening with their family and friends. It is an evening where the whole College community comes together to celebrate this year’s achievements.

The College magazine will be available on this evening.

All students participating in performances and presentations will be required to attend the rehearsals during the day at the venue. Detailed information has been distributed to students and parents.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at our Awards Presentation Evening to celebrate this year’s outstanding achievements together.

Human Power Vehicle (HPV) 2019

Congratulations to the 2019 North Geelong SC HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) team of students, staff and parents for a hardworking, yet fantastic year. The North Geelong Secondary College HPV team, for the 20th consecutive year, participated in the RACV Energy Breakthrough, four day camp. Maryborough comes alive during this time in the year, with several schools across Victoria participating in this annual event.

This year, the College participated with three teams; Storm, Tsunami and Avalanche and our students have shown strong leadership, sporting, team spirit and presentation skills. It was an outstanding effort from an outstanding team of Young Ambassadors for our College. Well Done!

Congratulations and a big thank you to Mrs Sherryn Martin, HPV Coordinator, who trained, organised and led the HPV team throughout the year. A huge thank you to the following teachers,  Mrs Sherryn Martin, HPV Coordinator, Mr Aaron Milsome, Ms Elizabeth Fagan, Mr Luke Scott and Mr Ash Howard, who have gone beyond the call of duty and spent four days caring and encouraging our HPV team who were competing/racing day and night.  An outstanding effort!

Also a huge thank you to Mr Nick Martin, Community Support member, who helped prepare the HPV vehicles and for attending the camp on the weekend assisting the team with the races.

Melbourne University Kwon Lee Dow Young Scholars Program – Joab Low

We congratulate Year 10 student Joab Low, who has become a part of the University of Melbourne Kwon Lee Dow Young Scholars Program.

Joab was chosen from an excess of 1800 students across the state and adjoining border regions, to participate in the program that will see him take part in events and activities to enhance his studies, inspire, and interact with the University of Melbourne community. Should he go on to enrol at the University, Joab will also be afforded additional program benefits.

In early December, the University will host a Welcome Event for all 700 selected Year 10 Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars. Students will be officially welcomed into the program and participate in a number of information sessions on the day including a welcome address from former Vice-Chancellor and the Program’s namesake, Professor Kwong Lee Dow.

Once again, on behalf of the North Geelong Secondary College community, we congratulate Joab for his induction to the Class of 2020 Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars. We wish him the very best over the next two years

Student Parties

Frequently we hear stories from around the state, of students organising large “parties” or “formals” in a school’s name, but where the function is not sanctioned or supported by the school. Invariably, a parent takes the responsibility for booking a venue.

Such functions are open to significant abuse, especially in relation to drugs, violence and alcohol and, if this is the case, those involved leave themselves open to legal action. I wish to make it clear to all, that the only College sanctioned activities that occur outside of the College by way of celebrations, are the Year 12 Graduation Evening on Tuesday, 18 October and the Awards Presentation Evening on Monday, 12 December.

As Parents or Guardians, if you are faced with the dilemma of whether a function is a school function, please ensure you ring the College for clarification. Whether or not you allow your child to attend any such party or event, is a matter for decision between you and your child. However, when discussing this, we suggest that you consider:

  • transport arrangements to and from any “function, event, party or after party”. We are all aware of the potential risks associated with young people travelling with young drivers particularly after celebrating; and
  • what level of security is being provided at the venue? There have been numerous stories over the years of such events resulting in alcohol and drug use and in violence.

If at any time you become aware of any event purportedly being held in the College’s name, please contact the College immediately so that we can clarify the issue with Parents and Guardians.

2020 Year 7 Parent/Guardian Information Evening

On Monday, 9 December at 6:00 pm the College will hold our 2020 Year 7 Parent/Guardian Information Evening.

If you are a parent of a child in Year 7 in 2020, please ensure that you and your child are in attendance. During this evening there will be a short presentation providing information for the beginning of next year and parents will have the opportunity to discuss, ask questions and get answers from the 2020 Coordinators, Principal Class Officers or the child’s Home Group Teacher.

Any parents unable to attend please call the school to make an alternative appointment time to receive the information.

Grade 6 to Year 7 Orientation Day Program, 10 and 11 December, 2019

On Tuesday, 10 December, all new Year 7 students in Victoria will be attending their secondary school for a whole day. This is part of their transition to secondary schooling and it is a state wide orientation day for public education. On this day our current Year 7 to 9 students will not be required at school. Some current Year 7 students will be attending, by invitation, to help out with our transition activities. I am looking forward to meeting all our new Year 7 students and their families.

North Geelong Secondary College offers a two day Orientation Program to our new Year 7 students. Therefore, the 2020 Year 7 students will be required to attend a second day of orientation on Wednesday, 11 December. All feeder Primary Schools have been notified.

I take the opportunity to thank Ms Katina Astles, Transitions/Pathways Leader, Mr James Cowan-Clark, Transitions/Pathways Assistant, Ms Tonia Tigani, Pathways Assistant, and other key stakeholders, for all their hard work in organising and implementing the two day orientation program.

End of the Year Activities Program

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 students will have the opportunity to participate in our Activities Program, from Wednesday, 11 December to Friday, 13 December. A variety of exciting activities (external and school based) have been offered to our Years 7, 8 and 9 students. Information and permission slips have been disseminated to students and final numbers per activity are due shortly. All students in Years 7 to 9 are expected to attend the activities program.

Thank you to Ms Sherryn Martin and other key stakeholders, who have worked hard to put together a very appealing end of the year activities program.

School Council Dinner, Tuesday, 3 December

The final School Council meeting for the year will be the School Council Dinner on Tuesday, 3 December at 6:00 pm at The Empire Grill, McKillop Street, Geelong. There will be a brief meeting before the dinner.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all Council members for giving up their time during the year, to attend Council meetings and contribute to our College community. Your contribution to the life of the College this year has been very much appreciated.
