Evatt Model United Nations

On Friday 3 August, a delegation of JMSS students participated in the Evatt Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition at The University of Melbourne.

The competition aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills. Congratulations to all students who participated!

JMSS represented at The General Sir John Monash Commemorative Service

Recently, John Monash Science School was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the General Sir John Monash Commemorative Service at Parliament House.

Held annually by the Spirit of Australia Foundation and the General Sir John Monash Foundation, students were invited to apply for the opportunity to attend.

During the event, our JMSS delegation was introduced to Vitreoretinal Surgeon, Dr. Rosie Dawkins, from St. Vincent's Hospital, before representing our school community during the service, which was held within the Legislative Assembly Chamber of Parliament House.

Well done and congratulations to our delegation of staff and students, who did a marvellous job of representing our school on this important occasion.

OutLoud 2018: Slam Poetry Competition

by Tuyen Pham, Year 10

OutLoud 2018 is a spoken word Slam Poetry competition for high school students to perform original poetry in teams of 2-4, this year with an 'Eco' theme.

John Monash Science School has an impressive reputation in this competition, having won the last two years in a row, so our team certainly felt a lot of pressure going in!

Our heats were held on August 7 at the Royal Botanic Gardens. We were under tight time conditions during the lead-up; we had only two weeks to come up with an idea, write a poem, pick performers and rehearse. Despite these initial challenges, we had a fantastic performance at the heats and out of the 8 schools competing, we were lucky enough to make it into the top 3 to go through to the state final!

The next two weeks were spent polishing and refining our act, and on the morning of Tuesday 28 August,  a group of 11 students and Ms. Wetherell set out for the final in Deakin’s Edge.

It was nice seeing some familiar faces from our heats as well as new schools; for me personally, some of my favourite moments were meeting the other performers and the atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement throughout the event.

Despite the tough competition, I am proud to say that our performance at the finals was exceptional, and, although we didn't quite manage to take out top honours this year, we are genuinely happy with the result.

On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Ms. Bourke and Ms. Wetherell for working out the logistics, assisting us throughout the process and accompanying us on our excursion.

Congratulations to the well-deserving winners St Albans Secondary College and the other schools that participated for giving us this amazing opportunity.

A massive thank you to the other members Sebastien, Daniel and Joshua for performing this poem with me, as well as the rest of the slam poetry group who all contributed and came along on the day to support us. We are all incredibly grateful for the fun we've had and the friendships we’ve made, and I couldn't be prouder of what we've achieved as a group. We look forward to next year!

Science Snippets: Spectroscopy in Remote Regions

On Thursday 6 September, our last lunchtime Science Snippet for Term 3 took place.

Monash University Associate Professor Bayden Wood, presented research focused on translating spectroscopy to the clinic and point-of-care deployment in remote communities.

The talk focussed on the application of portable infrared based spectroscopy to diagnosing malaria and sepsis in remote regions including Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Laos. His extensive knowledge wowed our students.

Thank you to Associate Professor Wood for a great presentation. Keep your eye out for the next exciting edition of  Science Snippets early in Term 4!

National WaterBug Blitz

The Monash Science and Innovation Hub is inviting students and families to participate in the National Waterbug Blitz!

The National Waterbug Blitz is Australia’s first nationwide, Citizen Science, waterway monitoring event. Over the month of October Australians are encouraged to discover how healthy their local waterways and wetlands are, simply by exploring and identifying what Waterbugs live in them.

This initiative facilitates training through a combination of Internet-based downloads and applications for smartphones and tablets. In addition Monash Science and Innovation Partners will have Waterbug Kits available for loan over the month of October.

Join us at the Monash Tech School during the School Holidays for two events:

Wednesday 26 September 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Wednesday 3 October 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Learn more about Waterbugs, citizen science and the National Waterbug Blitz from Yvonne Cabuang, a Regional Project Officer from the Melbourne Catchment Management Authority  and Fred Bullock, Treasurer, Friends of Scotchman’s Creek and Valley Reserve.
