Book Week

We've had a great week exploring authors and books as we dive into our chosen book - Rainbow Bear by Stephen Michael King.  A little blurb: Bear likes to dive into the deep blue ocean, blowing bubbles and turning somersaults. He wakes with the sun and sleeps with the moon. One morning, Bear is shocked to discover that his coat has changed. Is Bear dreaming? Or are two cheeky polar bear cubs responsible? Students have investigated facts about polar bears as they develop their schema (prior knowledge).  We've decorated our doorway and have rainbow bears galore! Come check it out. What a great dress up day we had.  Students looked fabulous in their chosen costume!

Fire Safety

Well done to our students and families for having those safety discussions about emergency situations and how to take precautions such as having working smoke alarms, a safe meeting place  and knowing where we live.  Our visits from the Croydon firefighters have complimented our unit on Safety.  Following this we have our Responsible Pet Ownership visit coming up and also our excursion to Kew Traffic School.  This week we had the excitement of checking out the fire truck! Check us out.

WALT (We Are Learning To)...

- develop our counting skills in Maths.  Students are exploring forwards and backwards counting (some from 0 and others from random starting points).  This week and next we will be using number lines to solve problems and develop our fluency with the counting sequence.  Stay tuned for updates on SeeSaw.

- explore poetry.  Students will be exposed to a variety of poems and exploring the guiding question 'what does a good poem look like and sound like?'

- develop our vocabulary regarding different emotions which will help us to infer characters feelings.  This work will take us up to the end of Term 3.  As well as this reading focus we are working towards achieving our personal goals and developing our fluency and expression!

Home Learning

Keep up the great work you are doing at home with your child.  Helping to develop and consolidate areas all goes towards them developing as a learner.  It's great to see student growth in areas of their Magic Words, number knowledge, vocabulary and writing skills.  We are always learning... even as adults!  See below for some helpful suggestions to keep your child progressing along the learning continuum.

Talking with your child

Regularly talking and interacting with your child extends their language and listening skills, and helps grow their confidence with language. Include your child when discussing everyday activities such as grocery shopping, gardening, cooking dinner, collecting mail from the mailbox, doing housework, and travelling in the car or bus. Outings can also provide a world of new vocabulary. Discussion during outings can enrich your child’s understanding of the world.  Outings might include going to the park, the zoo, a shopping centre, museums, libraries and art galleries.

Other fun activities can include:

» Share rhymes, poems and songs. Encourage your child to join in.

» Share and talk about family histories and family photos.

» Look at picture books or art books. Ask your child to describe what is happening in the pictures and make up stories together.

» Collect cardboard and other household items for your child to build with. Ask your child to describe what they are building.
