ADVANCE
ADVANCE
Despite the challenges of remote learning, the Advance group this year were able to produce some excellent projects.
Advance is a year long elective subject at Year 9/10, where students can work towards completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
There are four components to the award; physical activity, skill, service and adventurous journey. Students are required to set goals and work towards them over the course of 6 months to achieve their award.
This year, students were able to complete their community service at Milpara House, Vinnies Op Shop, Karmai Children’s Centre and Korumburra Primary School. Thanks to each of these organisations for their willingness to have the students attend on a Tuesday afternoon.
The skill component of the award was mostly completed at school, with students spending time working on a Passion Project, or project of their own choice. Some highlights from this years’ program were
- Creating a composting and recycling system for waste at school
- Learning to make (and making) jewellery
- Earning a coaching certificate and assisting the Primary School
- Making a podcast
- Creating a digital magazine on health and wellness
- Creating a model car
Our students from this year and last years’ Advance group were also able to attend a camp on Phillip Island to complete their award. Students were in charge of selecting and planning the activities each day, as well as navigating our way around the Island as they evaluated their touristic experiences. Highlights from the camp included;
- Camp dinner out at the Cowes RSL
- Star gazing and watching the eclipse on Woolamai Beach
- Hiking to the Pinnacles
- Ten Pin Bowling in Cowes
