LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
The Second Year of the Pandemic
I don’t think any of us thought that we would spend another year jumping in and out of lockdown – but we did. In 2021, snap lockdowns became almost a sport, there was betting involved, would we or wouldn’t we go into lockdown by the end of the day? And, how many days in lockdown can I do without going crazy?!
Fortunately, panic buying seemed less like a thing in 2021 but online shopping boomed. Local post offices bulged at the seams with parcels. Shopping in person for many was off the cards, (we felt for our Melbourne family and friends) and you knew you were doing it tough when all you wanted was a trip to Bunnings! Sporting competitions were on again and off again, many seasons finishing well before the end or right as grand finals were due to be played. And on the topic of grand finals, one match we did get to see was Melbourne vs the Western Bulldogs with Melbourne emerging victorious. Consequently, there was a COVID outbreak from illegal parties which seeded the virus in Gippsland.
Throughout it all, our teachers continued to improve their skills in online teaching, and our students did their best under trying circumstances. Our Year 12s absolutely shone. They earned our respect and admiration as they dealt with one change after another, taking everything in their stride. With aplomb they coped with the constant reshuffling of the GAT, the hurry up and get vaxxed message prior to exams, the avoid others at all costs and us treating them like endangered species before their exams, the whole stay home if you are a PCC drama, as well as the constant toing and froing of the last week plans and the Valedictory Dinner!
As the pandemic progressed, we knew it was only a matter of time before COVID hit us all personally. Whilst the vaccine mandate and pandemic bill caused a stir with some, our only wish was to remain open, which we did, finishing the year having spent our first full term onsite since 2019. Grade Point Averages (GPAs) remained strong, semester reports positive, with students grateful to finally see their friends and teachers again. We produced our first ever Burra Flyer, work experience finally happened, excursions took place now and then as we begun to get back into the swing of semi-normal life.
On reflection, it is true what people say, hardship can bring you together. Our students and staff are more focused and more committed than ever. We all have a renewed appreciation of what it means to attend school every day – onsite. We value the little moments, playing handball with friends, visiting the canteen, speaking with a teacher about the work, and spending time with colleagues and friends. We can’t wait to get back out into the world again. 2022 look out! We are coming for you!
To our community of parents, grandparents, friends, business owners, colleagues, and supporters, thank you for everything you have done for our students and the kindness and generosity you have shown us as a staff.
Have a Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy and Safe New Year.
