2021 Banned Book Display

This week in the library, students are celebrating ‘Banned Books Week’, that explores books that have previously been removed from library shelves. Reading groups have examined the topic of censorship and explored titles that have been challenged or banned due to perceived inappropriate content. Classics such as Animal Farm, The Catcher in the Rye and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland along with popular modern titles like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are all examples of previously banned books.

"Books with challenging content can serve as a vehicle for readers to explore alternative viewpoints and provide students access to a range of different reading materials in their school library." - Callum Lee (12.7)

Year 12 student, Josh Kirkaldy (12.2) loved reading Bridge to Terabithia and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and said he found it confusing that novels such as these have been removed from library shelves in the past. He believes there are different standards of censorship around the world and concedes there is a vast inequality of reading materials when it comes to access for all.
