CD Cover Design

During this semester the Year 10 Visual Communication students worked on creating a CD cover design.

Based on the constraints of a design brief, the students applied the design process in the development of their final pieces.

They also explored design elements and principles, and different media, particularly in the application of gauche. Working only in a ‘monochromatic’ color scheme, they produced beautiful paintings of their chosen vocal artist.

In the next stage, they completed a study on type and its importance in effectively communicating the intended message. After designing a type-face that reflected the mood and genre of their artist, they applied it onto the name of their CD.

Next, they manually generated a number of different layout designs,  scanned their gauche paintings into Adobe Photoshop and using a variety of tools and effects, created their very creative final designs.

Logo Design

The aim of this unit of work was to :

  • Introduce students to the elements and principles of Graphic Design and to learn to effectively apply the elements and principles to create a personal logo.
  • Develop an ability to manipulate type using computer text manipulation tools effectively and creatively, to design a variety of layouts for different carriers such as a business card and a matching letterhead.

Top Designs Visit

The Year 11 and 12 Product Design Fashion students spent a morning at the Melbourne Museum at the end of term to visit Top Designs and listen to Christina Exie give a keynote talk.

Christina is a Fashion Designer who is currently working on her signature collection for Bardot.  Christina has over 10 years global fashion industry experience.  Her focus is creative direction, design and product development.  She graduated from RMIT and had the privilege of winning the inaugural Project Runway Australia.  This led to the launch of her luxury women’s brand, ‘Eponymous’.   Christina has also designed for Sneakerboy, Rhodes and Beckett, Herringbone and internationally with Esprit.   Her experience and anecdotes captivated the audience of would be designers and later the students were able to look at the folio and designs that represented the Top Designs of student work in the State from last year’s VCE Product Design Students.

There was much energy and discussion amongst the students around the concepts of the designs from the exhibition, and interesting reflections from Christina Exie’s presentation.  It was very evident how her travels and experiences have consistently given her a source of inspiration.
