Barista Training

On Monday 3 June, our VCAL students completed their Barista course where they learnt the skill of making coffee from cappuccino’s to lattes and even coffee art!! Despite the cold, wet and windy day, students expertly prepared many teachers a coffee of their choice to practise their skills.

Year 12 Individual Projects

The past fortnight has been non-stop in VCAL with our Year 12 students undertaking their individual projects that they will present at the VCAL showcase evening on Thursday 27 June. Each student is conducting research in an area of her choosing and some projects include an associated activity.

On Tuesday 4 June, the Year 12 VCAL students participated in the Grand Tree Surfing at the Enchanted Adventure Garden in Arthurs Seat. The day was cold but it didn’t dampen the spirits of anyone as the students swung, jumped, climbed their way through five levels of obstacle courses. Despite some particularly challenging obstacles, all students should be commended on their participation and enthusiasm on the day. Staff were most impressed with the level of encouragement, teamwork and reassurance afforded to the whole group. Thank you must go to Charlotte for organising this as part of her project on deforestation/overcoming fears.

On Thursday 6 June, Pam Ahern, the founder of Edgar’s Mission came to Kilbreda to speak to the VCAL group. She spoke passionately about the history of animals, medical conditions such as hip dysplasia in dogs and the purpose of animals in our lives. Pam engaged all students and encouraged them to think critically and source all information available to them so they can make informed decisions – not only about animals but in life in general. All students thoroughly enjoyed hearing Pam’s story about how she founded Edgar’s Mission and the work she continues to do today. Thank you to Olivia for liaising with Pam to organise this incursion.

Also on Thursday 6 June, Beth organised ‘the perfect event’ for her individual project. Beth is studying events management at TAFE as part of her VCAL course and used the opportunity of an individual project to demonstrate all the skills and knowledge she has acquired. This included risk management, food handling, effective communication and occupational health and safety. Beth provided lunch for the VCAL group in the form of delicious salad sandwiches, fairy bread and juice. Congratulations to Beth on her coordination of this project.

Structured Workplace Learning

Throughout the year, our VCAL students attend regular work placements where, rather than learn job skills in the classroom, they learn in a practical environment. This term, we have had students with placements at Priceline Southland, Sandringham Dragons VFL club, Greencross Vet clinic in Sandringham, Myer Southland and Acacia Street Preschool to name a few. Students should be commended on their efforts at their placements.
