Senior School Athletics Carnival

The 2019 Girton Athletics Carnival was conducted at the Flora Hill Athletics Track on Thursday March 28th in near perfect conditions. The trials were conducted in the morning followed by the Spirit Cup and the track finals in the afternoon.

The Spirit Cup was a colourful display and in a closely fought contest it was Jones House who prevailed.

The Athletics Shield for overall champion House was won by Jenkin. This brings to an end the dominance of Frew who had won the athletics carnival for the previous 15 years.

Jenkin powered to victory in 2019 and certainly deserved to be crowned the winners.

Students who won events at our athletics carnival will now represent Girton at the upcoming inter-school events.

Big Hustle 2019

The opportunity to compete in a national tournament is an exciting one for any young athlete, but competing alongside professional basketball players eyeing off a spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, on the beautiful waterfront in Geelong, is a different ball game. After winning the 3X3 tournament at the Australian School Championships late last year, our Girton basketballers were edging to participate in their prize; entry to 3X3 National Big Hustle.

Hamish Walker, Martin Steen, Joshua Smith and Charlie Whitsed travelled to Geelong in the school holidays to compete in six games over Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14. The fast, powerful and continuous game style required some adjusting to when playing against teams of the highest calibre. Losing in the first two games of the tournament, our boys were eager to get a win on the board when they played on Centre Court amidst the film crews and commentators, which they did. All four of the boys sparked with Josh showing off his handles, Hamish taking his opportunities to drive with power, Martin using his height and strength to rebound and score and Charlie getting familiar with the new 2-point line at a distance (3X3 basketball awarding 2 points for a score behind the 3-point arc) all in the short 10 minute game. An impressive display during this game, mixed with some excellent learning opportunities in the other games, made for a fun and exciting day 1. Our boys finished the tournament on Sunday in 8th place overall (2-4) at the national level. We are certainly very proud of this achievement and are looking forward to more experiences with 3X3 basketball.

Playing in this tournament also had its perks outside of competition. We were lucky enough to spend our Saturday night and Sunday afternoon watching a series of men’s and women’s professional games for the Pro Hustle Tour. With courtside seats, we watched the best athletes in the game play off in the tournament for the opportunity to represent Australia at the next Olympic Games. Highlights included a dunk contest, Joshua being selected for the free throw competition and Jeremy Kendle, the star of the winning pro team, coming to speak with our students as he remembered them from Girton’s basketball program and our connection with the Bendigo Braves. I would like to thank the boys and their families, the Girton Basketball Club and Mrs Deirdre Tunzi for all the effort, organisation and support that went into the experience.
