Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya!

A week into the term and it was no time for relaxing in the Leadership Centre. Plenty of new and exciting learning opportunities were on show for the students and having our House Sports Day on Thursday was also a nice way to break up the week.

During our Reading rotations this week, students compared and contrasted a range of different digital texts exploring the literary elements of characterisation, setting, plot development, visual techniques and tone and mood. They examined how these elements create different effects in different stories. Students listened to their second listening post from Mackaroy Uncovered, and also completed a reading comprehension activity around ANZAC Day.

This week students expanded their understanding of simple addition equations in a range of different situations throughout our Numeracy sessions. Students used rounding as a tool to help estimate their addition equations as it supports the reasonableness of students’ answers. Students explored worded problems, 5 digit decimal numbers and fractions within their addition equations.

During our Guided Inquiry sessions this week, students had the opportunity to construct a number of different weather instruments that will be able to provide us data on the weather each day. As part of the unit “Think Global, Act Local”, students used a range of different every day materials such as straws, pencils, paper cups, container and a 2L bottle to construct a rain gauge, a wind vane, an anemometer and a barometer. The students can’t wait to test their instruments and provide the upcoming weather forecast for the weeks ahead.

Student Voice

  • Mehek - "I really enjoyed making the weather station during Guided Inquiry. My group made an anemometer which measures wind speed."
  • Harish - "The 'Mackaroy Uncovered' podcast was really interesting because you could visualise what was happening in the story. I'm looking forward to what will happen in the next episode."
  • Coby - "I really enjoyed the Sports day because we got to run short and long distance races and we did tug of war."

Reminders

High School Transition

Last week, via Sentral, all parents and carers of current students in Year 6 received a High School Transition Information Pack 2021-22. Transition forms need to be filled out and returned by May 14th. A signed hard copy can be handed to classroom teachers or a digital copy sent to Matt O’Hern. Please note, a digital copy must have a digital signature.

High Schools continue to operate school tours and extended information sessions. Tours and information sessions are a great way to learn more about a school and their various offerings.

If you have any questions about the process please contact Matt O’Hern (Acting Assistant Principal).
