Curriculum

Selemat Pagi, we have had a wonderful week as we edge closer to the end of Term One! For the first time this year, we were able to come together as a whole school for assembly and we were very excited to celebrate everyone’s great efforts.

In Maths, we got our formal units of measurement (the trusty ruler) and informal rulers made of unifix, icypole sticks and our shoes out as we explored Measurement. Our focus has been on what we can use as informal units of measurement as we noticed that the ‘ruler’ had to be the same length to be accurate. We also explored estimating as we moved away from guessing and instead we made reasonable and approximate judgements. We measured many different things including a silly activity measuring our own feet, things in the classroom and even natural resources like the leaves outside!

In Writing, we practised the character strength of judgement and teamwork as we explored peer feedback and punctuation. We paired up and gave each other feedback using the Feedback Sandwich as we found the things they did well, how they could improve and their next step. It was fantastic to hear the positive conversations and to see students working on their next steps immediately. We also had an exciting introduction into KungFu Punctuation, you might like to ask your child to share their impressive moves!

In Literacy, we continued our rotations as we practised the retelling and summarising strategy. Our focus on retelling supports us as independent readers as it promotes comprehension and vocabulary development as we use keywords to help. We have retold and summarised stories using the Five Finger Retell rule of setting, characters, problem, events and solution and the Somebody Wanted But So Then rule. Some of us have also explored a tricky concept of finding the main idea in different stories.

To celebrate Harmony Week, we each created a little mini-me that we decorated with different things that makes us who we are. We celebrated Australia’s cultural diversity and our school value of inclusion as noticed how different and unique each of the beautiful mini-me pictures turned out. We will soon reveal a great display of them and of who we are at MPRPS with our own touch.

Superb Sahib!

For demonstrating a love of learning when measuring the length of different objects around the classroom. You demonstrated the skills of a great mathematician and worked hard to use informal measurements such as unifix and dominoes to measure. Keep up the great work!
