Curriculum

“...41, 42, 43!” students counted on Bus 1 as we all piled in for the highly anticipated 5/6 Gala Day! We all had our fingers and toes crossed for a successful and DRY day down at Elgar Park and at the Nunawading Tennis courts. Students actively participated throughout the day rotating through games against 4 other local primary schools. All teachers were amazed by the sportsmanship and enthusiasm shown by the Leadership Centre. Students were a delight to take. A big thank you to Mrs. Brisbane and Mrs. Butterworth for organising the day AND the parent volunteers who also assisted on the day - we couldn't have managed the teams without you! A massive congratulations to the Boys Newcombe team and Girls tennis team for winning their section overall! It was such a fantastic day and we were all very relieved to be going home dry.

On Monday, the 5/6 students had all their Specialists classes as it was the teachers Planning Day for Term 2! Teachers spent time looking through the Student Voice survey for ideas on what to include for next term. We were given great feedback on potential persuasive and debating topics, focuses for Math, Reading and Writing sessions as well as some feedback on students well-being leading up to Camp Coonawarra. You can find the Overview for Term Two attached below. With only three days left until the weekend, students were busy finishing off portfolio tasks and unit assessments.

On Wednesday, the Community and Wellbeing Teams along, with 7 Year 5 students, participated in a first ever student Let’s Talk buddy session. Students participated in a range of role plays and learnt about the importance of talking about your feelings and emotions. Now trained, these students will be monitoring the yard wearing special pink lanyards as ‘Let’s Talk Buddies’ helping those who need it or would just like to talk with a peer. Thank you to the students who participated. We look forward to working alongside you and helping as many students as possible!

Also beginning on Wednesday, was the first of the lead character auditions for the Senior Production, Lion King! You could feel the excitement in the air as students practiced their lines at every opportunity. Mrs. Sutherland and Mrs. Andrews are working hard on the call backs and hope to let students know lead roles by the end of the Term, if not early next Term! Good luck to all the 5/6 students auditioning you are so brave!

On Thursday, the Year 5 students participated in a NAPLAN omnibus trial where they had 45 minutes to answer 40 questions. Please ensure that when we complete the real NAPLAN test on the 11th of May. That all iPads are fully charged and every child has headphones as some questions require sound. Teachers were impressed with the maturity and perseverance the Year 5s displayed during the ‘test’.

To wrap up our already busy, fun filled week, on Friday morning we had a whole school assembly- finally! It was so nice to be together again and for the Junior students to have such great role models to listen to and sing the National Anthem. Well done to Jay, Michael and Pearl for presenting about the Let’s Talk Buddy session and the Pleasant Snacks Managers for their presentation too. We will be having another whole school assembly on Thursday before the Easter Hat Parade. Look out for more information next term on whole school assemblies with parents welcome! Before the final I.C.E session of the term, the Seniors rotated through a selection of 4 different activities. Dodgeball (of course), Just Dance, Basketball and Capture the Flag. It was so much fun having the 3/4s join us for our Friday sport session, so fun in fact it may just become an end of term tradition!

High School Transition

Now is a great time to start discussing 2022 High School options with your child. Parents and carers can search the websites of High Schools to find out more information about school tours, open days and evenings.

Transition applications will be distributed early in Term 2.

If you have any questions about the transition process, please speak to your child’s classroom teacher or Matt O’Hern (Acting Assistant Principal)

Enjoy the final four days and we wish you a wonderful Easter Holiday break filled with chocolate!
