May 12 2021

Grade 1 News

We hope that all of the Grade 1 mothers enjoyed a happy and relaxing Mother's Day on the weekend.

By now all parents will have received their QR code to access SeeSaw, which we will be using as a digital portfolio this year. Please ensure you have downloaded the FAMILY app and logged in through this app, rather than the CLASS app which students used during home learning. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact class teachers.

English

Reading

Over the past fortnight students have continued to develop their ability to identify features of fiction texts including:

  • Identifying the beginning, middle and end in various fiction texts,
  • Summarising a story in time order including setting, characters, beginning, middle and end.
  • Using a variety of transition words e.g. firstly, finally, when retelling a story.

Students have also continued to build on their ability to write creativity and will move on to writing single paragraph informative texts.

Word Work

Students are continuing to revise the codes they learnt in Prep as well as adding new codes to their classroom working pack each week. Below is a PDF of the first 60 codes if you would like to continue revising these at home. If you click on 'present' and then click the code it will play the sound/s each one makes. A link to a video of the codes being said is also included below for students to revise.

The past fortnight students have been boot camping job 1, 2 and 3 of rule #7 silent final e (SFE).

#3: SFE jumps over the consonant to make the vowel say it's second sound.

#2: SFE stops v and u from being at the end of an English word. “Job 2, v and u.”

#3: SFE makes c and g say their second sounds. “Job 3, c and g.”

Students have boot camped the following rules so far this year:

Rule #1 - q doesn't go anywhere without u.

Rule #6 - y replaces i at the end of an English word.

Rule #2 - c makes its second sound /s/ when followed by e, i or y.

Rule # 3  - g usually makes its second /j/ when followed by e, i or y.

Rule # 26 - Capital Letters

Handwriting and letter formation is a focus during each boot camp session as this year we are trialing print instead of Victorian Modern Cursive.

Below you will find the handwriting script and the codes for your own use at home.
