BPS "Foundation - 6" School Swimming Program 2021
In 2021 BPS will be participating in a school wide Swimming Program for all our Foundation – 6 students. The program is part of your child’s physical education program and the Victorian Physical Education curriculum and it is an expectation that all students attend.
The Department of Education state that, “Swimming in Schools supports the delivery of quality swimming and water safety education. The initiative provides funding to ensure all students have the opportunity to:
- Learn how to swim
- Develop lifelong skills in water safety to reduce their risk of drowning and injury.
By the end of primary school, it is anticipated that students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills identified in the Victorian Water Safety Certificate. The certificate is awarded when a student can swim 50m continuously, answer water safety based questions and perform simple rescues.
Royal Life-saving Swim and Survive
“Our students will be part of the Just Swimming program at Nunawading Aqualink, Forest Hill. Just Swimming uses the Royal Life Saving Swim and Survive program for all school swimming programs. This program has been designed with many levels so that children and parents can observe the progression of their child’s swimming ability.
This program promotes education surrounding water safety, caters to a wide variety of different swimming abilities and meets various needs of people’s cultures and backgrounds. The water safety content and strength of the stroke technique development program will encourage stronger more educated swimmers. Each level, starting from Development 1 through to Level 7 has competency guidelines which swimming teachers must follow. Once a student has achieved the competence for each certificate they move to the next level. During the program students can complete more than one level and are not held back.” (Just Swimming information handbook).
Parent involvement
Parents are welcome as spectators however will need to pay the pool entry fee at the entrance. Parents with ‘Working With Children Check’ are welcome to come to help with changing students before and after the swimming lesson.
