Grade 5 & 6

We are only a week and a half into term, but we have hit the ground running. There has been so much happening!

Our Learning:

Our Year 5/6 classes have been participating in the Living and Growing Incursions. Students have been learning about how bodies change, body safety, respect and friendships. Year 5 students have also participated in a learning opportunity with the BluEarth Foundation. This is part of our Umbrella Dementia Cafe project for the year, as it works with students to increase awareness about the importance of staying active throughout your lifetime.

In Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops we have been exploring persuasive texts, focusing on the author’s purpose, determining important information, organising the structure of our writing and discussing word choice.

In Maths we have explored how mathematicians around the globe have to make sure they are consistent with the way they solve equations. This has led to the discussion of order of operations using the acronym B.O.D.M.A.S. This week students have also begun their mini unit on Addition and Subtraction using mental and written strategies.

Our Inquiry unit for Term 2 is ‘Australia as a Nation’ where students will learn about Federation and Parliament. Students will explore democracy, the electoral system, levels of government and how a law is created. This is a rich unit and students enjoy discovering the history of our democracy, as well as exploring what the future looks like as global citizens. We will be visiting Victorian Parliament later in the term.
