Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term Two. Thankfully we are not embarking on remote learning as we kick off this term, as we were this time last year!

Thank you to everyone involved in last Friday’s ANZAC Service. I appreciate the efforts made by our Year 6 students, Junior School Councillors, supported by Mr Campbell, in assisting with the service.

NEW TOILETS AND PLAYGROUND

Fabulous news this week that our new playground and new toilet block will be installed over the next two weeks. It will be all systems go for the fortnight, but such great news that we have been able to make this happen for the school and students. Please make sure that you have read the information sent out on Compass about the installation process and how we will be keeping the disruption to a minimum for our students.

ROTARY CELEBRATION

During the holidays Rotary Clubs around Australia celebrated 100 years of Rotary service in Australia. Part of this was a 'baton relay' involving organisations who have contributed to Rotary in the local areas. A huge thank you to our school captains who were able to attend and although it was VERY cold and wet on the day represented our school and our ongoing partnership with the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central.

NAPLAN

On Tuesday 11th May NAPLAN starts  for our Year 3 and 5 students. Over a million Year 3 and 5 students across the country will participate in the annual literacy and numeracy assessments, with some taking NAPLAN online.

NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment to help parents see how their child, compared with the rest of Australia’s children, is progressing in the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy. The information NAPLAN provides supports conversations between parents, teachers and schools, working together to help children achieve their full potential.

For educators, NAPLAN data can support school improvement processes by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against a national measure. In fact, NAPLAN is the only national literacy and numeracy assessment that allows parents and teachers to see this progress over a period ofyears. When NAPLAN data are used in combination with other school-based assessments, these can provide teachers with diagnostic information for planning their teaching programs, and guiding and supporting their students’ learning journey.

Literacy and numeracy are fundamentally important for all young people; however, NAPLAN is not, and should never be, the sole measure of a child’s achievement at a school or of the success of a school. School curriculum has much to offer. All students should have an opportunity to study a rich curriculum for literature, science, humanities and social sciences, technology, health and physical education, languages, and the arts.

As NAPLAN is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics, the literacy and numeracy skills that teachers teach in the classroom are what students are tested on in NAPLAN – so the best preparation is for teachers and students to continue doing the great things they do each day.

ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY

Each year the Department of Education and Training runs an annual student survey for students in Years 4,5 & 6 to assist the school to gain an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships and life in general.

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of your school.

Over the coming weeks, classroom teachers will administer the survey to each individual class and it typically takes students around 20 minutes to complete. Once the results become available I will share some of the key findings from this survey through the newsletter.
