Year 7

On Friday the 19th of March the Year 7 Hub hosted our welcome barbecue. It was great to see so many new and some familiar faces coming in and being a part of our College community. The bacon and eggs were well cooked with the members of the Year 7 Hub coming in early to make sure we had plenty
of food to enjoy. We would like to thank everyone who attended for joining us and our awesome staff who came in early to support the breakfast.

On the weekend of 20th to 21st of March, Kyden Beveridge from 7A, travelled to Mooroopna to compete in the Junior CFA competition.
The Juniors are split into 2 Categories; Under 14's and Under 17's. On Saturday the events included Wet hose, Marshall, Hydrant and Coupling races. Sunday continued with events including Hose, Coupling, Hydrant and Marshall races.
Kyden had a successful weekend, showcasing his running skills and enjoying the opportunities provided.
The fabulous 7D have settled in brilliantly at the College. The students came from 7 different Primary Schools so have been working at making new friends amongst the class.

In English 7D they have been reading Wonder and students are finding parallels between Auggie's start at his new school and their own. 'Being kind' is a life skill we are practising. Students also found or created their own precept which are displayed on the wall of their home room W3. They are very insightful into how each student thinks and see life.
7D have also been learning about ICT essentials - getting into Compass, saving work correctly, printing etc.
Cooking has been one of their highlights and many have gone home and practiced what they learnt to cook at school that week.

Science 7D
After beginning the term working through a unit called 'Working Scientifically' where students developed knowledge around scientific method, report writing, laboratory safety and laboratory equipment, students are now investigating 'Earth and Space'.
Students are developing and refining their

understanding of the universe and our solar systems place within it. They are discussing how night and day occur as well as the seasons and various moon phases. Students also research what factors contribute to both solar and lunar eclipses.
Pastoral 7D
Lilli Stephenson, a Year 12 VCAL student in the 'Community Group' has undertaken her major project for 2021 to create a time capsule. She has engaged all Year 7 students in this project. Our Year 7 students have been asked to write a letter to their future selves about their transition from Year 6 to Year 7 to place in the time capsule. The time capsule will be kept on the school grounds and reopened in 2026 when these students will be in Year 12. They are super excited at the prospect of opening the time capsule in 2026 and reading their letters - five years down the track.

Humanities 7D
Students have spent the first term learning about History and Geography in Humanities. 7D began the year learning about Ancient Australia and created timelines of significant Indigenous events. They finished their first term with a practical mapping task. Students applied their Geography skills to this task, creating an overlay map of the United States of America. Students created a base map with American cities and made an overlay layer, using baking paper, that displayed American mountain ranges and oceans. Students then looked for patterns on the map, and discussed the location of the cities in relation to the mountains and oceans. Next term we will finish Geography and move on to studying Ancient Egypt!

During the last 2 weeks of Term 1, the Year 7 students had a go at NAPLAN online in preparation for the 'real' NAPLAN online in May. 7B with Ms Bambrook had a perfect run in their practice during 3rd Session on Thursday.
Students across all Year 7 classes have had a wonderful time exploring Visual Art or The Performing Arts this term. Our Year 7 students have been busy experimenting with a wide variety of Visual and Performing Arts forms. Some Arts experiences have included: Ukulele, Keyboard, Percussion Instruments, Mime, Melodrama, Improvisation, Drawing and Sculpting with clay. Our Year 7’s are turning out to be an incredibly creative bunch and we can’t wait to see what they create in Term 2.
