It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first term. The children have settled well into their class and have enjoyed a variety of learning experiences. Units of work have been undertaken and completed, students have progressed with their learning and skill development, new friends have been made and teachers are busy with plans for Term 2!

I would like to thank the students for all their hard work this term, whether it be in the classroom or in the playground, as they learn to play together, compromise, negotiate and show respect, care and compassion. I would also like to thank the teachers for their dedication, passion and commitment to providing challenging learning experiences for the students in their care. Thank you also to our wonderful parents, your continued support of the school and staff is truly appreciated.

College Values

The College values of Compassion, Honesty, Respect, Integrity, and Kindness have been explored throughout Term 1 during Assembly and Chapel. The Primary School Captains, Kisali P and Owen M, have been unpacking what these values look like in action in the playground and in life. Last week they challenged the Primary students to participate in random acts of kindness. At Assembly this week, students from each class were awarded a certificate for their actions.

Ashlea C: For helping children out with sharpening pencils and making sure her friends are happy.
Kavin A: For being thoughtful around the classroom.

Hunter M: For always being kind and respectful to his teachers in the classroom.
Gunieve P: For being a great helping hand to her classmates in the classroom.

Oliver J: Always claps when someone presents their work or shares with the class.
Isabelle H: For putting Jasmine’s things away after recess without being asked when she had gone to her music lesson.

Year 1A

Adalynn M: For always offering to help her peers and her teachers.
Xavier F: For always helping others around him with learning tasks.

Year 1R

Sophia M: Everyday Sophia asks Mrs Russo if she requires any help in the classroom. In addition, Sophia always chooses to use kind words when talking to the children in 1R.
Leo O: Showed kindness to a class member when he thought no one was looking. Someone in 1R needed a friend and Leo was there.

Year 2A

Lee G: For finding a ring in the playground and handing it in.
Amelia L: For collecting her classmates' belongings from around the classroom and returning them.

Year 2M

Jack J: For always saying kind words to friends.
Harjas K: For being a supportive friend.

Year 3A

Ezel E: Keeping the door open for others.
Millie SB: Volunteering to help her peers with Book Creator, especially those who had never used it before.
Novak G: For helping other groups pack up during Maths groupwork.

Year 3T

Jordan B: For comforting a friend who was sad and tried to help them out.
Therese E: Although new to the school, she always makes others feel welcomed and included.

Year 4M

Sayuni M: For asking someone to play with her and her friends when she noticed a person alone.
Declan K: For checking on Malachi after he got a bump on his head.

Year 5A

Laila E: For consistently helping and supporting other students in class.
Tim C: For staying after Year 5 & 6 sport to help staff with packing away sporting equipment.

Year 5M

Kimaya A: For offering her umbrella to someone in need during the rain.
Max V: For doing some yard care voluntarily.

Year 6K

Mackenzie SB: For being a supportive friend.
Christopher A: For kindness demonstrated throughout the week towards multiple classmates.
Celeste F: For always showing kindness towards her partner and group members.

Year 6T

Kisali P: For always lending a helping hand to everyone.
Aurelia N: For showing kindness to all students.

Hopefully in Term 2, we will be able to welcome parents back to Assemblies and Chapel. We have to wait for Government guidelines that outline updated COVID safe restrictions in regards to student and adult capacity for gatherings in enclosed spaces.

Prep Update

Miss Gemma Jackson (AHOS)

The Preps have completed their first term of school and are ready for the Easter break. Last week, we made no-bake apple donuts. The students are really enjoying our no-bake cooking lessons where they get to practice their food handling skills and eat the delicious product. In Mathematics, we started learning about graphs. We posed many yes/no questions to investigate about our class. We enjoyed a special activity on the iPads where we filmed each other asking a yes/no question. We found out how many Preps had brothers or sisters, how many Preps had pets and how many Preps like reading. The students are looking forward to learning more about graphs next term. I would like to take the time to wish you all a wonderful Easter with your family. Take time to rest and we will see you in Term 2.

Year 1 & 2 Reflections

Year 1 and Year 2 students have had an amazing first term. We cannot believe it is over already! Here are some quotes from Year 1 and Year 2 students about our favourite things of the term.

Year 3 & 4 Update

Lyla B and Xavier M - Semester 1 Class Captains in 3T

This term we had so many fantastic activities, for example we had Cross Country and the Swimming Carnival! We have learnt about shadows and how to persuade our peers. We have learned about angles and we are now learning about numerators and denominators in Maths. We have been reading 'Ninja Kid 1' as a class, it is a fantastic book, it is really interesting. We have done a lot of group work. For example, in Maths we made a house made out of popsicle sticks to find angles. We are looking forward to everything in Term 2.

Charlie D and Jessica M - Semester 1 Class Captains in 4A

In P.E. we have been learning about athletics with our great teacher, Ms Seivers. We have really enjoyed playing on the new playground. The Swimming Carnival and the Cross Country was a highlight. The weather wasn’t too hot and not too cold.

In the classroom we enjoyed growing sunflowers and our data investigation in Maths. We loved giving presentations as we got to watch our friends do their presentations which was really interesting. In Kitchen Garden, we learnt how to pull out weeds and the different types of tools to use. Cooking was the best. We made yoghurt and fruit in a cone, stacked sandwiches, zucchini slice and zucchini gratin.

We say a big goodbye to Ned (Edward) B in Year 4A. We wish him all the best at his new school. Come back and visit us. We will miss you!

Year 4 Kitchen Garden

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program has been a wonderful experience this term. In the kitchen I have learnt how to follow safety instructions as well as cook. So far in the kitchen we have made stacked sandwiches, fruit cones with yoghurt and cooked zucchini slices. The kitchen has been my favourite. In the garden we have learnt to identify plants and seeds, what are weeds and how to pull them out and we have made mud balls with seeds. We came across several garden creatures such as snails, worms, spiders, bugs and so much more. Learning about the kitchen and garden has been fun.

It has been an action-packed Term 1 in Years 5 & 6! Students have been involved in a variety of learning experiences. In addition to the excellent work students have completed in classroom subjects, students have participated in Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals, the Year 5 & 6 Sport program and Sport Gala day, Year 5 Sovereign Hill excursion, Year 6 Earthcraft, and Buddies. Good Friday Fundraising Appeal

Roman P and Scarlett P organised a fundraiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday appeal. They supplied the lollipops and have been selling them to Primary students for the last two weeks and have raised a total of $300. Thank you to all students who have supported the cause. A special thank you to Roman and Scarlett for their effort, time and organisation.

What is resilience?

Resilience is the ability to cope with change and challenges; to ‘bounce back’ and recover when things go wrong. Ups and downs, change and challenges are a normal part of life and everyone goes through periods of feeling stressed, angry or unhappy. But if kids are stressed for long periods of time, stress hormones (particularly cortisol) can build up in their brain and interfere with their ability to learn and pay attention in school. Using healthy coping skills to deal with stress can help your child to pay attention, use higher level thinking skills and learn new facts and ideas. Resilience involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that can be learned over time. Here are some tips for encouraging resilience in your child.

Strong relationships

Encourage your child to develop a wide social circle of friends through school and extra-curricular activities. Help your child develop and maintain strong connections with yourself and other family members who they can talk to and go to for advice. By encouraging strong relationships and good communication, your child will have the opportunity to talk about important issues affecting them and feel supported when they experience life’s inevitable disappointments and hurts. Connecting with people provides social support and strengthens resilience.

Self-respect

Self-respect is very important to building resilience. When your child believes in themselves, they will have the confidence to handle challenges and disappointments when they occur. Encourage your child to learn to trust themselves to solve problems and make good decisions. Talk to your child about when they have successfully handled difficult situations in the past and let them know that previous challenges can help you build strength to handle difficult situations in the future.

Values

Resilience is linked to character traits such as kindness, honesty and empathy. Doing things to help others or ‘make a difference’ can help build children’s sense of worth and strengthen their resilience. Talk to your child about the importance of being kind to other people and encourage them to get involved in age-appropriate volunteering (such as Clean Up Australia Day).

Change is part of life

Change can often be scary for children and teens. Help your child understand that change is part of life, and that changes can be positive. Talk about how people grow and learn new things through change. Encourage your child to think about how they have already changed and grown so much since they started school. Try to give your child extra attention and patience if they are feeling anxious about changes in their life and let them know that though some things will change, they can always rely on your love and support.

Onwards and upwards

When your child experiences a difficult situation in their lives, try to talk to them about it and give them your encouragement and support. Let them know everyone goes through troubles and that bad times do not last forever. Talk to your child about situations in your own life when you have gone through a hard time or succeeded despite an initial setback. Encourage your child to think about ways they can make themselves feel better when something upsetting happens – like doing a fun activity, talking with a friend or going for a walk. Help your child to see the good things in life (even in times of stress) and be optimistic about the future. Encouraging your child to develop a positive attitude will help strengthen their resilience.

Self-care

Encourage your child to eat properly, exercise and get enough sleep and make sure they have ‘down-time’ to just relax and have fun. Making sure your child is healthy and has time for fun will help them stay balanced and better able to deal with stressful times.
