Classroom Compost Bins

Aitken College will be implementing classroom compost bins across the school at the start of Term 2 to reduce the amount of rubbish that goes into landfill. This is in line with the College’s strategic plan to reduce landfill accumulation and try to achieve a benchmark of 0.3 metres cubed per student/per year as set by Sustainability Victoria. We will be able to compost all food scraps such as: fruit, vegetables, meat and bread using an anaerobic composting method. The Environment student leader’s will be overseeing this great initiative.

Water Audit

Student leaders at Aitken College are currently undertaking a comprehensive water audit of the school. The audit will involve monitoring Aitken’s water consumption, recording the number of taps, drinking fountains, toilets, urinals, water tanks etc., and investigate how water is used within the school. The data collected will be used to:

  • assist Aitken College renew its water module, which is a requirement of being a Resource Smart School
  • raise awareness and hopefully change behaviour/habitats towards water conservation and
  • improve Aitken College’s water management in the future.

We can all do our bit to help conserve water. As our population grows and climate change makes rainfall less reliable, by making small changes to our everyday habits, we can all make a difference. Here are simple water saving tips:

  • taking a minute off your shower
  • brushing your teeth with the tap off
  • going easy with the hose
  • fixing any leaks
  • scraping plates instead of rinsing them, before putting them in the dishwasher
  • placing a plug or container in the sink when preparing vegetables, washing fruit or washing dishes
  • using an air-blower or broom to sweep the driveway, instead of a hose.
