What's happening in 1/2?

Inquiry

Earlier this term we enjoyed a Science incursion to kick off our Inquiry unit, All Mixed Up. Each class participated in a 90 minute session with the leaders from Mad About Science. They showed us some chemistry experiments but the best part was when we got to have a go ourselves! We tested substances to see if they were acids, bases or neutrals, and found out what happens when you mix baking powder and vinegar and seal it in a bag. We also made sherbet and got to take some home to taste. Since the incursion we have enjoyed completing weekly experiments in our 'Lab' and we look forward to seeing what we will mix next!

MATHS

Weeks 3 & 4 in Maths have been like no other. We have been walking around our rooms, chatting to our classmates and eating M & Ms and Smarties in class!!! Have you guessed what we have been up to? That’s right we have been learning about data collection and representation.

Each class participated in a range of hands on activities to learn about why and how we collect data. The students worked in small groups and in pairs to learn about the importance of tally marks, relevant categories and how to visually represent their information.  See below for the steps that we used in class to help us through the process.

Independent Work

The students were then given the task of completing the process independently and they produced work to be proud of.

During weeks 5 and 6 we will be looking at different strategies we can use to solve addition and subtraction problems. We have been working in small groups to practise these skills.

Literacy

This term we have been making text to text connections  We are drawing comparisons between texts.  The texts have mainly been fiction, but we have also compared some non-fiction texts. We are encouraging students to make connections between the text and themselves by identifying the characters' feelings and when they have felt this way in their own lives.

Religion

Our focus in RE this term is looking at change and transformation as we see it in the life and actions of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Students reflected on the events of Pentecost and how the gifts of the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the courage to go out and continue Jesus' mission. We identified ways that we can be Pentecost people and use the gifts of the Holy Spirit to continue to bring Jesus' message to the world
