Education In Faith Pentecost Sunday

Come Holy Spirit....

This weekend in the Catholic Tradition we celebrate  Pentecost Sunday.

The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers. The event of Pentecost changed the world and gave rise to today’s Church. Christ had promised His Apostles that He would send His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day.

That is why Pentecost is often called “the birthday of the Church.”

The Holy Spirit is still with us today. We often use these three words ‘Come, Holy Spirit’, as a prayer or a meditation. The invitation for the Spirit to ‘Come’ indicates recognition of the need for the Spirit’s within our lives.   It is a powerful, simple prayer that can be used at the outset of any significant undertaking or whenever you find yourself in need of inspiration.

The challenge for us is to be open to the Spirit

Where in your life could you use the guidance and strength of the Spirit?

Our Reflection

Hearts ablaze
Beautiful Lord,
may we say “yes” to you
so that the Spirit in our hearts
will once again be set ablaze.

Spirit of Wisdom,
guide our actions so they tell of God’s love.

Spirit of Truth,
open our eyes to see the world as it really is.
Spirit of Power,
enthuse us to work for justice throughout the world.

Spirit of Love,
inspire us to respect the dignity of each person.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill us.
Come, Holy Spirit.
Come.
