ALUMNI & CAREERS

Term 1

Alumni

Today we were delighted to welcome back an alum with a diverse career to speak to both Vocational and Legal Studies classes.

Ryan Popovski graduated from WHC in 2015 and has gone on to become a lawyer and an online business owner.

Despite what you might think, Ryan's career pathway is more unconventional than his job titles suggest: after school, he enrolled in a teaching degree, before deciding to transfer into a Bachelor of International Studies. He later added Law to make it a double degree.

His journey shows that there are other ways to pursue a career in law, even if you miss out on a place in a law degree straight after Year 12. Ryan's also a great example of someone who didn't necessarily know what he wanted to do after high school, but has followed his interests and found two fulfilling careers.

Ryan spoke to the Senior VCAL students about the business side of his life, as the co-owner of a clothing brand, ferv by j. He said he'd always had an interest in fashion - even making and selling shirts at school! He told students about how the business started and some of the intricacies of running an online business, like finding an ethical manufacturer and marketing on social media.

He then spoke to the Legal Studies students about his work as a lawyer, helping people with buying or selling businesses, and assisting families with the transition of assets from generation to generation. The students were also interested in asking about different types of law and what it's like to work in a law office.

He encouraged students in both classes to take their opportunities, and to not be afraid to try new things.

Thank you to Ryan for making time in his busy day to speak to our students!
