YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Term 1

Senior School Semester Exams

Week 9 (final week of Term) will host the exam period for our Senior School students. Students in Year 10 will have normal scheduled classes, with examinations occurring in their core subjects during class time. It is expected that Year 10 students are in all classes during the final week of school.

Year 11 & 12 students will not have classes during this final week. Students are reminded they must attend the College for their scheduled examination in full school uniform, it is important that all students carefully check the examination timetable in the coming days. Any students with exam clashes must organise an alternative time to sit this exam – this can be done by seeing the Year 11 or 12 LCL:

Year 11 LCL – Ms Sullivan

Year 12 LCL – Mr Bullock

Year 11

The Year 11 students have been busy as usual with SACs, excursions, and school events. VCE students have been completing a week-long English SAC where they have explored writing for different forms and purposes. Biology students were out on Monday for a biolab excursion to Belmont High school, learning about homeostasis and the role of thyroxine. They compared the level of energy in different athletes.

Year 11 students also represented WHC at the Barwon Secondary Cross Country on Monday, with Josh Unthank taking out first place and Jack Unthank a close second. And finally, last Thursday some of our students participated in the VTG Women in Trade event where guest speakers from the building and construction industry spoke to them about career opportunities and answered questions about their own experiences.

Students are reminded to complete the pathways survey that has been sent out to them, in preparation for their course counselling appointments next term. Also, if you have a family holiday planned during the school term, could you please let the school know as soon as possible, so that your student can complete any necessary coursework or assessments.

The Year 11 Art Making and Exhibiting students have been exploring art forms and selected an art form they felt more connected to, to present a final artwork based around our theme, Nature.

Year 11 Visual Communication and Design students created a poster advertising a product of choice. They used a mix of manual and digital elements in this.

Biology

As part of the Year 11 Biology area of study 2, students went on a BioLab excursion on Monday to learn more about homeostasis.

Students used ELISA techniques to test the effectiveness of negative feedback temperature regulation in producing thyroxine in two different sports persons exposed to cold temperature over time.

Year 12

Today we celebrated the birthdays for our Year 12s who had a birthday in Term 2 with cake and a song in our wonderful winter sunshine! (Thanks Lily Fowler for the cakes and the great pictures above.)

Just a quick reminder as winter approaches, for the students to look after themselves as winter colds can take a toll on the students. Sometimes it's better to stay home for a day and rest than to battle through several days at school.

A few important dates to remember:

  • Thursday 15 June – GAT for all students in Year 12. Part A Literacy and Numeracy is for all including VCAL students; Part B General Achievement is for students doing a Unit 3&4 subject.
  • Friday 16 June - Our Year 12 Formal at the Community Centre. Planning is almost over for this event and a brilliant job from some of our VCAL students and Ms Dickson in the organisation of this function. A reminder that tickets can be purchased online through Compass or at the general office.
  • Monday 19-23 June – Exam week for all VCE subjects. We hold practice exams to help students cope with the stresses of sitting exams so they can experience the processes and time management skills that are required for these types of assessments. The timetable is on Compass, starting with English for all. Students in Year 12 are not required at school when they do not have exams – but we are expecting them to be preparing for the exams when they are not here.

Brett Bullock, Year 12 LCL

History Revolutions

Year 12 History Revolutions are currently studying the Russian Revolution. The students are pictured racing to be the first group to chronologically order their timelines.

Visual Communication and Design

Students are working on designing their own shop front facade using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. They've been working so well and learning so much along the way.

Psychology

As part of Area of Study 2 which focuses on “how people learn and remember”, the VCE psychology students took part in a practical activity last week where they assembled a mega version of the multi-store model of memory.

VCE - Vocational Major

Port of Geelong

The VCE-VM students have been researching local industries and the employment opportunities within the Port of Geelong. Each student chose a specific industry to research and analyse the wage entitlements, workplace conditions, advancements within the company and pathways to achieving employment. Students spent the morning at the Geelong waterfront participating in an audio-visual presentation at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club before boarding a small boat that took students to different wharfs within the northern port of Geelong. Students learnt about the imports and exports that boost Geelong’s economy as well as the shipping industry of Geelong.

Road to Zero

As part of Personal Development, the VCE-VM students have been analysing health campaigns that influence young adults. The students travelled to the Melbourne Museum to take part in the TAC ‘Road to Zero’ program. Students experienced many interactive exhibits that taught them the importance of all aspects of road safety, the VR experience being a highlight. Students then used interactive booths to create their own TV commercial that advertised either pedestrian or cyclist road safety issues.

Mock Interviews

VCE-VM students have been busy creating and updating their resumes and cover letters to pretend to apply for a employment opportunity advertised on Seek. Students all completed a mock interview with Lochlan or Ebony from Vic Group Training.
