Cross Country Trials
On Friday the 28th of April our students took part in the House Cross Country Trials held at our very own Brentwood Secondary College. Despite the cold and wet conditions, a huge number of students completed the course and qualified for the school team. With a big bump in numbers compared to last year, I'm looking forward to seeing even more of our wonderful students fighting for a spot in the team in 2024.
While qualifying for the team was the focus, we still had a very tight competition between our school houses with the following results:
- 1st place - Waratah
- 2nd place - Wattle
- 3rd place - Banksia
- 4th place - Jacaranda
Congratulations to Waratah house and to all students who placed in the top 15 in their age group. They will now compete at the Monash Division event on Thursday the 25th of May at Norton's Park against our neighboring schools.
There were many hands involved in the running of the date, include our senior VET students who assisted with the set up, running and pack up of the trials, as well as numerous teachers who help to supervise the runners whilst outside the school. Thank you to everyone involved!

State Swimming Finals
On Friday the 28th of April two of our students, Harold Xu and Golden Bao, competed at the SSV State Swimming Finals at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The two swimmers got to the state finals curtesy of winning their respective events at both the Monash Division level and the Eastern Metropolitan level in Term 1. Having attended the state finals in 2022 I can attest to the outstanding quality of competition at the finals. The students competing are all in the top tier of swimmers in their age group with most in state and regional squads.
While qualifying for the state finals is credit enough, Harold and Golden both performed exceptionally on the day and achieved amazing results. Harold placed second in his event, the 13 years 50m butterfly, with a time of 31.36 seconds (only three tenths of a second behind first). While Golden placed third in his event, the 14 years 50m breaststroke with a time of 35.46 seconds.
Congratulations to Harold and Golden on their accomplishments. Being only in year 7 and 8, it will be exciting to see what these two talented swimmers can achieve during their time at Brentwood.

EMR and State Diving
On Monday 1st of May I had the pleasure of attending the EMR and State Diving Championships held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. What made the day even more enjoyable was being joined by seven talented students, up from only two in 2022. All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and I am looking forward to more recruiting and seeing if we can get an even larger squad in 2024!
All students performed extremely well in the morning, in some cases having only dived a couple of times previously. Here is a summary of results:
- Natasha Winbanks (16 years): 1st in EMR and 2nd in State. This is an outstanding result for Natasha having only taken up diving during the last year. Natasha competed in 2022 and clearly enjoyed the day enough to come back and to even get her sister onboard! She also piled on 20 points to the results from last year, a huge improvement.
- Amelia Winbanks (13 years): 2nd in EMR and 4th in State. Like her sister, Amelia has only been diving a very short time however is showing a lot of talent and potential. Amelia was up against a very large field in both the EMR and state events and I'm sure she will get onto the state podium next year.
- Aisha Woon (17-20 years): Aisha was a new addition to the team however that didn't stop her from placing 3rd at the EMR level. A talented gymnast, Aisha took to the new skills of diving brilliantly and will hopefully come back for one more crack in 2024!
- Keira Woon (14 years): Another talented gymnast, Keira was keen to improve from her performance last year. Keira managed to place 4th at EMR and progress to the state finals where she placed 8th.
- Hayley Browne (15 years): A new addition to the team, Hayley took to the stage extremely well, placing 6th at EMR and qualifying for the state event in the afternoon where she placed an impressive 10th.
- Max Taborsky and Jett Boyd-Lingard (17 years): The two most adventurous and entertaining divers on the team, Max and Jett both showed great natural talent in their EMR events, placing 2nd and 3rd. Though they didn't qualify for the afternoon event, the two boys had a great time and I'm sure will be back for more next year.
A big thank you goes to Ms Rachel Woolley who help supervise the team. A talented diver and diving instructor herself, I'm sure Ms Woolley will be keen to help our diving team for many years to come.

Badminton Tournament
Recently, Brentwood’s badminton teams competed in Badminton Victoria’s All School Championships at MSAC. Having both public and private schools involved in this tournament, the day was filled with lots of strong competition in both divisions. Despite having multiple issues with the buses, our teams arrived in good spirits for the tournament.
Brentwood had 3 teams competing, 2 in the open division and 1 in second division. Both open division teams fought very hard against states and national players, though we came back defeated, we had a lot of fun getting to experience what it is like to play in the top level, our second division team ended up placing 16th out of 24th. This tournament definitely motivated us to train harder for future competitions and hopefully come back with medals. Even though the competition was tough, our teams came home with new friendships and learning experiences that will encourage us to play even better at interschool sports.
Team 1: Hwani Shin, Tnghin Istvan Ng , Ken Yamanaka, Farhan Abu Bakkar Sithick, Jared Loo, Jarrod Si
Team 2: Tanmay Dayal, Shreyaj Guha, Arvind Indukuri, Benjamin Lee, Dylan Lam, Adhyan Kathpal
Team 3: Troung Lam, Andy Xu, Antonios Plokamakis, Kanta Nishimoto, Eric Liu, Hugh Sadler
Thank you to Mr. Li for organising this event for us, as well as training everyone so we could play our best, and another thank you to Ms. Argus for driving us there and back, and making sure the day ran smoothly.
Well done boys, we are all proud of you!

Junior Boys Netball
On Friday 5th May, seventeen Year 7 and 8 boys attended Dandenong Showgrounds to complete in the Monash Division reserve round. Students were supported by their coach Samuel Van Holysteyn and myself. Unfortunately, we were out classed on the day by Wheelers Hill Secondary College. Our students chased down every ball, rebounded every shot and played amazing zone on zone defense. The players gave 100% on the court and demonstrated great sportsmanship towards their own players and the opposition. It was a pleasure to take this group of athletes out of school for the day.
