STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

PRIDE WEEK

May 17 to May 21

On Monday 17 May, the SRC and Stand Out started our Pride Week with IDAHOBIT Day - an International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia.

IDAHOBIT is a day to celebrate and appreciate our diverse community and to stand up for equality for all members of society. The day is about raising awareness, championing inclusion in schools and workplaces and for celebrating the LGBTQI+ community.

To help recognise diverse groups, there was a flag display in the PAC foyer throughout the week.

On Tuesday, we celebrated POC Pride, which was about challenging stereotypes and racism.

Wednesday was the celebration of Neurodivergence. The aim to increase awareness, understanding and to help create a better educational setting for neurodiverse students, including but not limited to those with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia and Dysgraphia.

Large posters were displayed along the PAC windows explaining the positives very successful people have found from being neurodiverse.

Thursday was about Disabilities Pride, with the aim of developing an understanding of the challenges around accessibility and environment for all people.

Our Pride Week culminated in a Pride Party on Friday, with live music from our wonderfully talented students, a sausage sizzle, cake stall and face and nail painting.

RECONCILATION WEEK

May 24 to May 28

MORE THAN A WORD. RECONCILATION TAKES ACTION

LHS started Reconciliation Week on Monday 24 May, a few days earlier than the official start on, Thursday 27 May.

Reconciliation Week is a time to celebrate and build on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community.

From Monday to Thursday during lunchtime, we screened Rabbit Proof Fence and The Sapphires in the Library.

We also held a colouring competition, the winner of which, will be announced when we return to onsite learning.

On Thursday May 27, the anniversary of the very successful 1967 Referendum, an Acknowledgement of Country was given by our wonderful School Captain, Brendan Kirk before a flag raising ceremony with our new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags, hoisted into place by the lovely Connor and Charli.

TRACKY DACK DAY

Unfortunately due to the current COVID lockdown/restrictions and return to remote learning, our Tracky Dack Day fundraiser and Reconciliation Week celebration, planned for Friday 28 May, was postponed until remote learning resumes for all students.

Tracky Dack Day is the one day a year, tracky dacks become the fashion choice that says “I care.”

Here’s why – sick kids in hospital are encouraged to get into tracksuit pants and out of their PJ’s to transform their mood.

Tracky Dack Day is organised by TLC for Kids, Australia’s most inclusive children’s charity.

LHS students will be invited to ‘dack up’ in solidarity with these children to show them that Australia cares.

There will be a bottom half free dress day (date to be confirmed) for a gold coin donation.

Funds raised from Tracky Dack Day will provide practical relief to sick kids and their families.

On this day, we will also celebrate RECONCILIATION as a community with live music performances, a sausage sizzle, temporary tattoos and fun activities; including a banner which everyone is invited to add their hand print and message to.

World Environment Day

 Saturday 5 June

Every year since 1974, World Environment Day is observed on June 5. This day is celebrated to encourage awareness and environmental protection.

LHS celebrated World Environment Day with an at home screening of David Attenborough's Extinction on ClickView.

World Oceans Day

Tuesday 8 June

The theme this year is, The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods.

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

We highly recommend families watching David Attenborough - The Death of the Oeans at home on clickview and the video about today One Planet, One Ocean: Mobilizing Science to #SaveOurOceans

If students would like to be involved in helping to build an environmentally aware community and make a real difference to the environmental impact of LHS, they can email the SRC@lilydalehs.vic.edu.au
