THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE AT FLINDERS

In week 9 our International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) students ventured to Flinders University for a day of exploration in regard to the Theory of Knowledge, one of the core subjects for the diploma.

Students took part in a number of workshops, and engaged with university representatives to explore the nature of knowledge and its value, posing key questions as to how we determine the difference between fact, belief and opinion. Students critically analysed media publications, exploring content from the most recent state election, to the conflict in the Ukraine. In each case, students were prompted to reflect on their understanding of key concepts such as power, war, control and freedom, and to pose logical reasons that influence their perception of truth.

Students were able to work independently using the Flinders University facilities to plan a critical knowledge discussion based on current events, ending with a final presentation to university staff. During the presentation, each student presented their understanding of the importance of knowledge, and each received feedback from university representatives and school staff to further challenge their developing understanding.

As a growing area of study within the school community it is been exciting to see students rising to the challenge of the IBDP. Students have regularly displayed attributes such as thinking, inquiring and reflecting in order to build a stronger understanding of the world. Each student will present an exhibition later this year showcasing their ability to draw complex connections between different forms of knowledge. Their ongoing explorations in this area will ultimately shape them as individuals encouraging them to become active and influential global citizens.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME - AN EXCITING NEW ERA

Having completed the authorisation process to deliver the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in 2021, this year has seen the first cohort of students undertake the programme. From Chemistry and Mathematics, to Japanese and Literature, IBDP students benefit from pursuing a broad range of subjects designed to promote integrated thinking and active engagement with the world.

Throughout the year, students have grown in their ability to think critically, learn independently, and to contribute to meaningful discussion with their peers. The program strives to build communication and thinking skills, and students have enjoyed the challenge of applying knowledge from their subjects to real world contexts.

As part of the core program of the IBDP, students have engaged with experiences to expand their cultural understanding and develop new skills and interests. An early creative experience allowed students to try their hand at traditional calligraphy and Japanese book making. This was a positive experience offering the chance to develop and pursue new skills, while developing intercultural understanding of the significance of literacy and its uses throughout history.

The IBDP presents a rewarding opportunity for all students to engage in their learning with autonomy, promoting positive study habits to support students in their future endeavours. Information about the programme and its benefits is available on the school website, and information sessions will take place in the term ahead to support current year 10 students in selecting their study options for 2023.
