Plain English Speaking Award

PESA contestants including Northcote's Edie S.

Clear and effective spoken English in action

On Friday the 26 May, Northcote High School had the honour of hosting the Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) for our division. PESA is a competition that has been running in Victoria since 1977 and at a national level since 1978. The aim of this competition is to encourage students aged 15 to 18 to write and deliver speeches on topics of their choice, as well as impromptu speeches.

For the impromptu speech the speakers would enter a room where a secret topic lay face down on a table. With just four minutes to plan their speech, they would then deliver a compelling presentation lasting 2-3 minutes based on the undisclosed topic.

Listening to all the speeches was an incredibly motivating experience. It was amazing to hear everyone talking about topics that meant something to them, these topics ranging from the benefits of nuclear power to why we should all embrace creating bad art. Each speaker applied their unique insights and knowledge to craft speeches.

Following the prepared speeches, it was time for the impromptu round, the topic given to them was what we take for granted. It was astonishing to witness the diverse range of perspectives that emerged from this single topic. Each contestant managed to bring their own originality and creativity to their impromptu speeches.

Overall the day went very well and I am so glad I had the chance to attend.
