Human Rights Workshop

Exploring social justice issues at Melbourne University Law School

A group of our Year 8 students were invited to attend a workshop at the Melbourne Law School last week, on the topic of Human Rights. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness about human rights among students with an interest in human rights and social justice issues. It was also designed to expose students to a university learning environment and build shared connections among those students who attended.

“I really liked going to the law school at the University of Melbourne and learning about these important topics. Some of the main reasons why are… I liked meeting the people there, and I liked the first activity where we met the people around us and learnt about them, how we should never judge someone before we know them. I also thought that the talks that the presenters were giving taught me a lot while also being fun.

Some of the other things I liked were the tours that we got of the law school and, of course the food :)”

Kieran Meinshausen, 8H

“The Human rights workshop was an amazing experience at the Melbourne Law School. Those attending were there to learn about social justice and human rights issues that are currently faced in Australia and the world. We listened to guest speakers and participated in group discussions on issues such as indigenous incarceration rates, statelessness, and gender equality. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who was looking to go in the future.”

Leo Cooper, 8F

“On Friday, a group of 6 NHS year 8s (myself included,) went to a human right's workshop and lunch hosted by Melbourne University's Law school. we listened to a series of lectures from people involved in advocating for a range of initiatives. We learnt about statelessness, indigenous rights and how to translate our ideas into action. We then went on a mini tour of the law building, visiting the mooting and practice courtroom. Through-out the day we learnt a lot.”
