From the Library

Puzzles in the Library

A feature of the library enjoyed by the students is our STEM table which was made by the school’s Design Technician, James Dutton. The table has a three-panel top, and the panels can be removed individually to provide workspace for Stem and other activities. During recess and lunch students have been invited to work on jigsaw puzzles on the table. This is an unstructured activity with students free to come and go as they please.

Currently there are two puzzles in progress and a third completed. The Stem table has a lip around its edges which prevents any puzzle pieces falling to the floor and getting lost. Once the session is complete the top panels are returned protecting the students work on the puzzles until they next visit.

Indigenous Audit of the Library collection

Last Tuesday the library hosted a journalist and photographer from the AEU, who came to hear more about the library’s Indigenous Audit project. The discussion which also included members of the RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) working party explained the process of assessing resources for historical accuracy, representation, and authenticity. Dr. Al Fricker, our Indigenous consultant was on hand to deliver powerful advocacy for the ‘decolonisation’ process and meet with one of our First Nations students, Finn. Al has also offered to advise on the development of Northcote High School’s RAP.

Currently the nonfiction and biography sections of the library have been evaluated with approximately 170 books being removed and 9 items being archived. In 2023 we aim to look at the fiction collection, a much more difficult task as the content will be subjective.

The AEU plan to feature the project in the Term 4 edition of AEU News.
