Year 7 Table Tennis

Congratulations to our Year 7 Table Tennis team who competed in the Darebin Division Competition in the last week of Term 3. Finishing off the day as winners overall they have now advanced through to the next round and will compete in the Regional Comp later this week.  We in the last week of Term 3 wish them well.  Thank you to our Students Coaches Isaac Bartley and Sam Heaton.

State Athletics

It was exciting to have 5 of our students recently compete at the State Athletics at Albert Park. First up we had Jacob Hebden having an amazing race coming second in the Hurdles. Zoe Hargreaves competed in the 800m’s, Sophea Xintaropoulos in the Shot Put, Yahia Eissa in the Walk. Our last competitor for the day was Niamh Tabit who came in second in the 1500ms.  It was a fantastic day all round and was lovely to see parents come along and cheer as well. Well done to all 5 of our amazing athletes.

Year 7 & 8 Rubgy League/Oztag

Mr Strachan and I thought we were the only rugby league fans at Northcote High and we were not sure a anyone would turn up to the tryouts, but we were pleasantly surprised! We had enough player interest for two boys teams to be entered and they went on to play 4 bruising games each in Dandenong - including one against each other.

Most other schools were much more experienced and, in some cases, legitimately double the size of our students. The Northcote teams were more than competitive, scoring multiple tries and improving remarkably in each match, but unlike the girls, they didn’t qualify for State. Very proud of the effort put in when tackling and taking hit-ups into heavy contact. It was very satisfying to see the team learn skills and strategy from the opposition in each previous game then used to their advantage in the next game themselves.

Hopefully we get the same enthusiasm next year as we had plenty of Year Seven students playing well above their weight that can play next year too. Eligibility is for those turning 14 before the end of the calendar year.

After only two training sessions the U14 girls team headed out to play 6 other teams from the Eastern suburbs in a one day Gala. The girls came up against their hardest competition in the first game and put in a stellar effort even though it ended in defeat. They brushed this defeat off quickly and with each game they continued to improve with the 2nd game resulting in a draw, followed by two incredible wins in game 3 and 4. Excitedly the girls watched the final game for the day and were ecstatic when they heard that they had come third for the day, and were through to the state finals against the western suburbs, being held in Week 7. The U14 girls team have since been training each week and hope to do even better in the state finals in Week 7.

Year 9/10 Regional Hockey

The intermediate boys hockey team battled hard in the regional finals but ultimately could not take advantage of opportunities in front of goal on the day. Both games they played resulted in 0-0 draws which was not quite enough to advance to the final on the day.

The intermediate girls team played exceptionally well in the regional finals to finish in 2nd place out of five teams. With a number of club hockey players in the team, Northcote outclassed 3 opponents before falling to Melbourne Girls College 2-0 in what turned out to be the Grand Final.

Year 8 Regional Hockey

The Year 8 mixed hockey team played in the regional finals last Wednesday. A fantastic achievement considering the inexperience of the team. Northcote managed 1 draw and 3 losses on the day to finish in 4th place out of 5 teams. A big shout out to Harvey as our Goalkeeper and Tom Oldfield for performing a tagging role on some strong opposition players.

Year 8 Basketball

Well done to our Year 8 Basketball team who recently competed in the Regional Competition at Coburg Basketball Stadium. Our boys had some competitive matches and all showed good teamwork.  A big thank you to our student coaches Toby Stanford, Lewis McBride and Rocket Douglas. A huge thank you also to Cathy Lester for all of her hard work that she puts into Basketball throughout many year levels at NHS.

Year 9/10 Futsal

On Monday we had 4  Year 9/10 Teams compete at the Darebin Divisional Competition.  Our boys teams had some tough competitive matches throughout the competition. Kaan dominated every game and were unlucky to miss out on playing the final due to one goal.

In the girls competition, both of our teams had success throughout the day with both teams finishing on top of their pool, which made for an exciting final where we had Northcote Year 9s vs Northcote Year 10.  It was a close match the whole game with both teams showing their speed, skills and agility. The Year 9 girls came away with the win to become overall Darebin Divisional Winners.
