Year 8 Volleyball

Year 8 Volleyball Regionals

At the end of October, the Year 8 Girls Volleyball team represented NHS at the Regionals Volleyball Competition. The Year 8 students; Rosie Cantwell, Trixie Baker, Emily Johnson, Chloe Lawless, Matilda Cowling, Georgia Barlow, Tia Crowe and Keeva Martain have been working hard on improving their skills since joining the NHS Development Program at the start of the Year 7. The team’s skills and knowledge of the sport has improved significantly over the last two years which was highlighted throughout the Regional tournament. The team was undefeated throughout their pool games due to their accurate serving, ability to run strong offense and defend difficult passes. Matilda Cowling captained the side and was a fantastic leader throughout the tournament. Unfortunately, NHS lost the grand final against Eltham High. Eltham had a very strong team, and the NHS players learnt a lot from playing them in the grand final. Thank you to Leila Lavelle and Jacqui Barlow for coaching the Year 8s, you did a fantastic job!

I am so excited to see what the future holds for this team. Each student has so much potential, and they are such a great group of students! Most importantly, they have so much fun together when playing volleyball.

Well done Year 8s!

Year 8 State Basketball

On 13 November, the Year 8 boys basketball team trekked it out to MSAC for a big day out at the state tournament. Despite the traffic on the way there, we made it just in time for our first game. We played Berwick college who were a tough opponent to start the day and unfortunately, they got the better of us. Our second game was against Emmanuel College, who sadly had a strong lead over us when the final siren went. Our third and final game was against Catholic College Wodonga, the boys were determined to finish on a good note and win their final game. In the beginning it was a reasonably close game, although we had majority of possession, we weren’t converting well in the first half. Throughout the second half, the boys took out a strong lead and ended up winning their final game comfortably, which was a great finish to the day! The boys did a great job to get to state and they should all be super proud of themselves and what they have achieved.  Everyone worked well together and overall had a great day out. Thanks to Pauline, Ms Gogerly and Mr Bartholomew for supporting the boys and contributing to their success throughout all the tournament days, we wouldn’t be able to do it without you!

Staff Vs Student Beep Test

We had approximately 20 students and 3 staff compete in the Staff vs Student beep on Thursday. There was a lot of cheering for both staff and students and things really heated up as the numbers started to drop off. The last 2 competitors left were Mr Bartholomew and Yr 8 Student student, Harry Marr. Mr Bartholomew once again was the overall winner, but I am sure Harry will be back next year to try and take his crown!

Sport Awards Breakfast

Last Friday we held our Annual Sport Awards Breakfast, a favourite event in our sporting calendar.  It not only marks the end of another fantastic year in sport, but also gives Sports Captains the opportunity to shine, running the morning's proceedings as we celebrated our sporting achievements.

Guest speaker Emily Hamilton Smith
Guest speaker Emily Hamilton Smith

We had two wonderful guest speakers – Australian Hockey Player Emily Hamilton Smith and Basketballer Mike Fortune.  Their speeches were inspirational as they both spoke about the ups and downs of achieving their goals, how perseverance and resilience helped when times were tough. They both mentioned the importance of balancing school and sport and also how couldn’t have achieved their success without the support of their families, coaches and team mates.

It was a wonderful morning shared with parents and families, staff and students. We would like to congratulate all the Sport Award winners listed below.
