Wellbeing Presentations for our International students

Our Social Worker/MHP, Jane, and Secondary School Nurse, Tess, joined the year 10 International students over 4 weeks to present on various health and wellbeing topics. These sessions covered- accessing healthcare in Australia, mental health and wellbeing, and body image. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in various activities. Thank you for having us and we look forward to delivering more of these sessions in 2024.

Mental Health First Aid at NHS

This term saw the official roll out of Teen Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for students at Northcote HS.

MHFA teaches students how to support a friend or classmate experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. Students learnt how to recognise mental health problems and how to apply appropriate mental health first aid in these situations.

Students in Year 7, 9 and 11 have completed MHFA training. This means that approximately fifty percent of students are equipped with the lifesaving MHFA skills needed to help a friend or classmate experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

It’s not just students who benefit from MHFA. This term a group of teachers and Education Support staff completed Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This course gives staff the skills and confidence to respond to the mental health needs of students and young people. These staff will help to contribute to the whole school approach to wellbeing and mental health that we are so passionate about.

A huge thank you to staff who volunteered their time to do this important training and to all students in Year 7, 9 and 11 whose thoughtful participation made this training so meaningful.

Over the next few years, we aim to have all students trained in Teen Mental Health First Aid. Stay tuned to the newsletter in 2024 for opportunities for parents and carers to take part in Youth Mental Health First Aid training.
