FemCo zine making

Workshop with illustrator and artist Ashley Ronning

Innovate grant in action

Thanks to NHS’s Thrive Innovate grant, FemCo were able to hold a half-day zine making workshop with local illustrator and zine enthusiast, Ashley Ronning. This event was organised as a way for FemCo to share the concepts we speak about each week during our club meetings with the wider NHS community.

On the day, Ashley started the session by sharing her creative practice with the group, followed by a quick drawing exercise to get the students ready to start creating. Students then discussed different ideas that they could turn into zine format. Some chose to make informative zines about specific topics like intersectional feminism or stereotypes, and some opted to create educational stories about everyday feminism.

Then it was time to start making! Ashley had even made us some zines on how to make zines which the process as simple as possible. The students were given a wide variety of materials to choose from to make their zines such as markers, stickers, watercolour and collage materials. Most of the workshop was spent actively working on zines – the students even stayed during recess!

At the end of the session, those who had finished were able to photocopy their zines and trade with each other. Some students are using the final weeks of FemCo to finish off their zines, photocopying and folding them. We will have all the finished zines ready to be taken home by anyone who is interested by the end of the school year.

Thank you to the NHS Thrive Innovate Fund for providing the funding for this valuable project.

Overall it was a very special morning where students were given the opportunity to discuss important topics with their peers across a range of year levels (7 – 9), and supported by Ashley to creatively channel these ideas into zines to share with the rest of the school community.
