Student Services : Wellbeing

Welcome to Term 3!

We hope everyone had a wonderful school holiday break and you are feeling ready for a busy and exciting term 3. If you need a reminder about how to access wellbeing support at NHS, please see the below flyer:

Year 10 Love Bites

During week 2 and 3, our year 10 cohort will participate in a consent education program called Love Bites. The interactive and engaging program provides a safe environment in which young people can discuss and learn about their rights and responsibilities in relationships and look at ways to access support when needed. Each year 10 class will participate in a full day of Love Bites within their connect class group and we will have both school staff and external facilitators running the program. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a creative session to be displayed in the school.

Youth Reference Group at Headspace

Are you or someone you know passionate about advocating for positive change? Applications are now open for Headspace Greensborough/Plenty Valley Youth Reference Group. Not only is it a great opportunity for young people to have their say but it looks great on their CV and opens up future opportunities (including sitting on interview panels and other paid opportunities). See the flyer below for more information.

Stay well this winter

In Victoria, influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection numbers are high among school-aged young people, particularly in those in their first few years of school. The Victorian Department of Health expects more respiratory infections over Term 3.

Most children with flu or RSV have a mild fever, runny nose or cough. Some children, particularly babies and children with underlying medical conditions, may have more severe illness.

Parents, carers, and students are encouraged to:

  • wash and sanitise their hands regularly
  • avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing · stay at home if unwell and consult a general practitioner (GP) or NURSE-ON-CALL as needed
  • stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Flu vaccinations:

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu. Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older. As part of the National Immunisation Program, it is free for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and older
  • children aged 6 months to under 5 years
  • people aged 6 months or older with underlying medical conditions.

Flu vaccinations can be booked through GPs, pharmacies or your local council immunisation service.

The Drum Youth Team- Freeza Team

The Drum youth team, a dynamic municipal-wide youth service that operates in Carlton, North Melbourne, CBD, as well as the Richmond and Collingwood public housing areas, has extended an invitation to the students at Northcote High School to participate in their youth team called The Freeza team. The Freeza Team supports young people in various aspects of their lives, enabling them to explore different education, training, and employment pathways, and helping stay connected to education. They offer a safe space where young people can interact and learn from their various monthly workshops and events and can acquire practical skills to enrich their pool of knowledge.

They are particularly focused on engaging with young people from Carlton and Parkville backgrounds/identities, including:

  • Young people of colour who are often referred to as culturally, 'racially,' ethnically, and religiously diverse (CALD), including refugee and humanitarian entrant young people
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+)
  • International students
  • Public housing residents
