Year 8 Hockey

Year 8 Basketball

The Year 8 boys and girls basketball put on many dominant performances at the divisional finals last Friday, with most opposition teams struggling to reach double digits against us. The teams played in a great spirit, graciously respecting the mercy rule once they reached a lead of 20 points. This meant our players only defended the opposition players from the back half of the court. In the end, the boys walked away with the trophy, easily dispatched Thornbury in the final, while the girls managed third against Lalor Secondary.

Year 7 and 8 Hockey

On 15 August, Northcote students competed in divisional hockey at Darebin Community Sports Stadium. First up was the year 7 boys, who won both games convincingly. They are now off to regionals in term 4. Next up was the intermediate boys who had a few hiccups before the game started but once on the field they fought hard. Unfortunately they couldn't score a goal and were defeated 2-0. Last game of the day was the year 8 girls. Unfortunately Thornbury were too good for us and got away with the win. Overall it was a great day out and in true Northcote style, all students played their hardest and showed great sportsmanship throughout the entire day. Next up is regionals on 19 October where the year 7 boys and year 8 boys will both competing.

Year 7 Girls Regional Badminton

Congratulations to our Yr 7 Girls Badminton team who recently competed in the Regional Finals at Darebin Community Sports Centre.  Our girls had some tough opponents coming up against Macleod SC, Hume AG and MGC.  They played well and showed great improvement through the day.

Year 8 Volleyball Mini Tournament

Last Thursday the Year 8 squad in our Volleyball program, gathered in the gym full of excitement and enthusiasm. Each Year 8 team had the opportunity to play one another, aiming to be crowned the Year 8 Champions. The winners of the Year 8 tournament would also be given the chance to play their coaches in a friendly lunch time match.

Each team developed more and more confidence throughout each match. It was great to see the students supporting and encouraging one another, regardless of whether they won the point.

The Year 8 ‘B Boys’ were extremely competitive, even renaming one of their coaches ‘Wincent,’ instead of Vincent. The ‘A Girls’ followed the brief of dressing in their team colour. They were covered in red gear from head to toe, and even brought along red pom poms to cheer from the sidelines. The ‘A Boys’ were light on players due to injuries and other commitments but that didn’t bother them! They played with four players and were still tough to beat! The ‘B Girls’ were fantastic cheering their squad members on and did some very impressive receives against some powerful serves!

Congratulations to the ‘B Boys’ for winning the mini tournament. The friendly match between the coaches and the winners will be organised before the end of term.  A HUGE thank you to the fabulous Year 10 and 11 coaches, Connor Murray, Fred Culham, Chiara Vagnarelli, Jacqui Barlow, Leila Lavelle, Vicent Wang and Miles Clancy for running such a fun and successful event.

NHS Volleyball Program student shout out

Congratulations to Luci Silva for winning the Year 7 Girls Div 2 MVP award at the recent Volleyball Victoria 3 Day Tournament. There were over 50 students in the Year 7 Div 2 Girls division, so this is a fantastic achievement.

Luci has a dynamite, overarm serve that is very difficult to return. Luci’s record throughout the tournament was 10 serves in a row! Luci is a fantastic team and squad member who is always encouraging and supporting others on and off the court.

Well done Luci! The teaching and coaching staff, along with the students throughout the NHS Development Program are very proud of you!
